Jenna Lyons Doesn't Care About Your Work Outfit

by Erin Mayer

Jenna Lyons, creative director of J. Crew and every fashionable lady's style crush, doesn't care what you wear to the office. No, really. She doesn't care if you come in wearing pressed trousers and a cashmere sweater or a burlap sack (although, might I suggest you make that a J. Crew burlap sack to demonstrate brand loyalty). What does matter to Lyons? Your handshake.

The Cut spoke to Jenna Lyons at the premiere pop-up shop event celebrating the debut of Public School for J. Crew. When asked about her thoughts on office attire, Lyons was surprisingly cavalier:

"If your teeth are clean and you have a good handshake and you’re groomed, I don’t care what you wear. Go for it. Whatever works for you," Lyons said. Even a shorts suit? "Oh yeah, there are a lot of legs in our office."

Of course, regardless of all this, if you're about to shake hands with Jenna Lyons, you best be wearing your corporate best. Have you seen that woman (of course you have, you probably watch Girls )? She is impeccable. She is the main reason that thick-rimmed glasses are cool. She is the reason J. Crew is cool. Without Lyons, every J. Crew store would be a cinderblock room full of cashmere sweaters. Okay, I'm hypothesizing. But the point is, she's always flawless and so perhaps you should leave that burlap sack at home when showing up at her office. Or at least, you know, follow some basic internship dressing rules. Chances are she means you don't need to drop thousands of dollars on Jimmy Choos — a pair of $50 heels will do just as well.
