If Latinos Said The Stuff White People Say

by Emma Cueto

White people often don't understand the idea of microagressions, the seemingly harmless racial comments that, when experienced over and over again, get to be exhausting and discouraging. But hopefully the Buzzfeed video "If Latinos Said the Stuff White People Say" can provide some insight. Like the "If Black People Said the Stuff White People Say" version before it, it's a brilliant and hilarious video that touches on a serious topic.

For the record, having a Latina nanny or liking spicy food does not make you an honorary Latino. Telling someone to learn English is rude (especially if you don't speak Spanish). And saying that a person could "pass" for white is not a compliment. Also, don't start saying Spanish swearwords just because you can. Because the thing is, hearing a comment along those sorts of lines once every so often maybe wouldn't be such a big deal — but when you hear stuff like that all the time it just reinforces the idea that you're The Other, which is not a feeling anyone needs in their lives. So if you're a white person and this video makes you feel uncomfortable and stereotyped, imagine how it feels to deal with that sort of nonsense all the time.

Oh, and don't ever, ever say that someone only got into a good school because of affirmative action. Seriously, get it together fellow white people.
