Nicki Minaj Tweets About Racism Plus 7 Other Celebs Who Have Spoken Out Against Racism

Nicki Minaj is known to unleash some pretty empowering words—or cutting, depending on who you ask. Today Nicki Minaj tweeted about racism, posting "racism is alive & well," and "some people have to put in work. others get to cut corners. we see it but don't say it. welcome to the real world."

There's obviously no way Minaj will allow being a minority to hold her back from accomplishing any mission upon wish she embarks, but hopefully she'll provide details as to exactly what prompted these messages, for the sake of awareness. Meanwhile, Minaj joins a growing list of celebrities who address racism but for the sake of brevity, here are 7 other celebrities who have spoken out against racism.

Rihanna

You can always count on the Rihanna to speak her mind and when it comes to addressing racism, her outspokenness doesn’t waver. It’s a shame that she had to defend herself against a Dutch magazine editor’s bigoted statements, but I’m so glad she did.

Ellen DeGeneres

As host of the Oscars, DeGeneres fearlessly addressed racism within the film industry when she said, “Possibility number one: 12 Years a Slave wins best picture. Possibility number two: You’re all racists.” The quip may have elicited laughter from the audience, but there was a harsh truth in DeGeneres’ joke.

Oprah

Switzerland found out the hard way what happens when you mess with Oprah, particularly if you’re being flat-out racist. Oprah apologized for the backlash that ensued after she claimed a boutique employee refused to serve her because of her skin tone, but honestly I wouldn’t have blamed her if she didn’t.

John Oliver

Last Week Tonight’s John Oliver expertly turned the tables on media outlets whose Cinco De Mayo coverage was downright racist.

Demi Lovato

Thankfully, Lovato is one celebrity who doesn’t hold her tongue when it comes to addressing sociocultural issues. So it’s no shock that she was among the many celebrities who voiced their opposition to racist comments made by disgraced former Los Angeles Clippers owner Donald Sterling.

Prince

Prince isn’t so far removed from those of us who are spellbound by his endless musical talents that he can resist making a song about a meme, or speaking out against racism he’s experienced in the entertainment industry.

Kim Kardashian

Even though she only recently discovered the impact of racism, it’s still worth noting that Kardashian deviated from her usual lane of endorsing products and reality shows to speak out against racism.
