Hilary Duff's Writing About Marital Separation

It's pretty much accepted at this point: Millennials are having a hard time letting go of their child. We'll dive head-first into any new technology, sure, but we're also pretty nostalgia heavy folk, and that's reflected in the way we talk about people like Hilary Duff and her new album. But we might have to finally let Lizzie McGuire go, you guys — because Duff's writing about her marital separation on that new album, and that's some grown-up shit.

Duff describes the album as "heavy" and "dark" as a direct result of her separation. And yes, "So Yesterday" was a break-up song, but it's kind of likely this one goes a little deeper, you know? As Duff said during an interview on Billboard's Pop Shop podcast:

I'm separated from my husband right now, which has been a very difficult thing to go through, but we have a lot of love for each other and we have this beautiful baby. There's a song about Luca and a song about my separation and my love for this person, that maybe we're not meant to be together, or maybe we are. It's very, very personal.

See, that shit's automatically higher-stakes than whether the dude in "So Yesterday" ever got his shirt back.

I think I just needed to get that out. And once I did get that out a lot of fun came.
