Jesse Eisenberg Goes Crazy

It's weird to think that this movie was written by the hilarious nerdy guy from The IT Crowd, Richard Ayoade, because just judging by the first trailer it looks like it has a very distinctly creepy vibe about it. As creepy as you'd expect a movie about a guy meeting his identical double to be, anyway. But here it is: The first trailer The Double , Ayoade's upcoming film starring Jesse Eisenberg as a dude who is driven crazy when he meets his doppelgänger.

The movie is billed as a comedy, so it's possible that the tone of the trailer just doesn't mirror what the film actually is — but with the dark imagery, the eerie soundtrack of "Grinnin' In Your Face" by blues singer Son House, and the shots of everyone looking stoic/distressed, it's hard not to feel your the hairs on the back of your neck stand just a little.

Add the fact that the doppelgänger begins to take over Jesse Eisenberg's character, Simon's life, and the hairs on the back of your neck are suddenly standing a lot. The thought of doppelgängers is just inherently creepy.

The film itself is based on a novella of the same name by Fyodor Dostoevsky, and also stars Mia Wasikowska, Noah Taylor, Wallace Shawn, and Yasmin Paige. It will premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival this weekend.
