Larry King Tweeted A Terrible Thing About His Wife

by Jessica Blankenship

You would be well-challenged to find a person who supports the legalization and de-stigmatization of sex work, and the protection and re-humanization of sex workers, more than I do, but in the course of traveling what will undoubtedly be a long road to get there, I think it's important to always be aware of the difference between "not thinking that sex work is an inherently insulting profession" and "not thinking that sex work can be used as an insult". What's nice about figuring out this distinction is that we will always have people to point it out in cringe-tastic clarity, like Larry King, who tweeted that his wife "would've made a fortune...if she had been a hooker." LARRY. This is about 14 different kinds of "not a compliment."

Upon seeing this painfully strange thing to say about one's wife, I checked out other tweets posted by Ye Olde Suspenderson last night, searching for something that might give this insulting jab the benefit of context. Maybe the hooker comment made sense within a bigger string of tweets? Not that there's much I could've found that would've excused making a pointed implication that his wife's sole avenue to independent wealth would've been selling her ass, but it turns out, there was no context (so at least we're saved the energy of grappling with even the flimsiest of ambiguity about it this morning). He did, however, admit to having a crush on Regis Philbin, but honestly, if you know anything about Larry King's erratic and inexplicable tweets, that confession does nothing but confirm that the TV host was, indeed, in his usual "sound" state of mind while behind the wheel of his own social media last night. Yikes.
