How to Carve a Turkey Like a Pro

Because the idea of cooking an entire turkey kind of terrifies me, I’m not making one today — which means I also don’t have to worry about figuring out how to carve the dang thing once it’s cooked. But for those of you who do have a whole roasted bird to carve later on, this one’s for you: The Daily Share has produced the only “how to carve a turkey” video you will ever need. It’ll teach you how to get it done in under a minute and a half, and you get to boogie down to a rockabilly soundtrack while you learn. It doesn’t get much better than that, right?

The Daily Share’s tagline is “News, information, enlightenment. And sad Kanye” — which, after a perusal of their YouTube channel, looks pretty accurate. They’ve been releasing handy Thanksgiving hacks and tips all season, including how to make a low-cal pumpkin pie and how not to fry a turkey (faaaaaaaaaail). I would argue, though, that the “how to carve a turkey” video is hands down the most useful one, because… well, no bird deserves to be hacked to shreds.

A flat knife — not a serrated one — works best for carving, and for the love of Cheese, make sure it’s sharp. Here’s how to do it in six pictures; scroll down for the whole video:

Step 1: Let It Be

Or more accurately, let it cool. The key here is not planning on dinner happening the second the bird comes out of the oven.

Step 2: Make Sure It’ll Never Walk Again

Too gruesome of a joke? Sorry. But I mean, we did just roast the life out of the thing, sooooo…

Step 3: Plate the Thighs

Self-explanatory.

Step 4: Assume the Position

The last thing you want is to have your bird roll off the table because you neglected to hold it down. Talk about awkward.

Step 5: Carve Away

Place the slices on a serving platter as you go.

Step 6: Chow Down

Enjoy!

Watch the full video below for a little extra information about exactly how to handle your slicing technique. Happy Thanksgiving, everyone!
