De Niro & DiCaprio's New Short Asks Many Questions

While it's probably to be expected that any short film directed by Martin Scorsese featuring Leonardo DiCaprio, Robert De Niro, and Brad Pitt would be pretty amazing — but trust me when I say that, in addition to being pretty amazing, it's totally nothing like you'd expect. Case-in-point: The trailer for the short film, which is apparently called The Audition , was just released, and after watching it a few times in a row, I'm still pretty overwhelmed.

First things first: It's not an actual film (sadly). Though this is technically DiCaprio, De Niro, and Pitt's first time working together (though Scorsese has worked with all of them, separately), they're really just appearing in a short film and accompanying trailer to promote two new casinos in Macau and Manila. This doesn't take away from the quality, though, of course: According to The Verge, the short film cost about $70 million to make, and it definitely shows.

Secondly, this is just the trailer for the full short, which will actually premiere in mid-2015 when one of the new casinos, the Studio City resort in Macau, opens for business. However, running at just under a minute in length, it does give us a pretty good idea of what to expect: Basically, Scorsese invites both DiCaprio and De Niro to the casino in Macau, where they discover that they're actually there to compete for a role in his new film — the same role. Pitt is somehow involved in the action as well, but it's not fully clear how because he's not really in the trailer — just De Niro and DiCaprio, facing off for a coveted role in a Scorsese film. It's hilarious, and, in a way, sort of makes me wonder who would win in a bar fight.
