Nina's Breakup Could Give '50 Shades' Hope

by Lindsay Mannering

Oh, no. No, no, no. No! Us Weekly confirmed that after six weeks of dating, Nina Dobrev and Derek Hough broke up. The Vampire Diaries star and the Dancing With the Stars professional decided that their relationship had run its course, so they called it quits. It's a dark day for fans of B-list twentysomething love in LaLa land, that's for sure.

Evidently, it was the literal distance that caused their emotional distance. Nina is filming her CW hit in Louisiana and Derek is on the set of DWTS in Los Angeles... an insider told Us that the mileage between them was just "too much to handle."

Their relationship wasn't all for naught, though. It seemed to have brought Nina and Derek's sister, Julianne Hough, even closer together. Judging from Julianne's Instagram feed, they're best friends who do stuff like, you know, share a box of donuts, call each other "my beauty", and support each other's careers. Even though Derek's now out of the picture, it's pretty clear that Nina won't break up with his sister, too.

Plus, this breakup could be good news for Ian Somerhalder. It's not that Nina's ex and current co-star has expressed interest in getting back together with her, but the fact that they're both single will give Nina and Ian shippers something to hold on to.

And think about it: Now that Charlie Hunnam has bailed on Fifty Shades of Grey and a petition for Ian Somerhalder to star as Christian Grey has hit the Internet with an intensity only gaggles of young female fans can generate, perhaps Nina's post-Derek flame for Ian has been rekindled. Because hey, it's only a matter of time before Ian gets the part, Dakota Johnson drops out, and Nina's called in to star as Anastasia Steele.

Pretty sure that's how all of this is going to go down.
