Mushu Better Be Chatty In Live-Action 'Mulan'

by Kristie Rohwedder

Well, well, well. Looks like Disney will make a non-cartoon movie out of youuuuu, Mulan. Monday, The Hollywood Reporter shared a fun lil scoop: Disney is developing a live-action version of Mulan. The remake of the 1998 animated classic will follow in the lucrative footsteps of, like, 75 other beloved Disney animated movies that have been or will be live-actionified. (I realize that number might be a little high, but I erred on the side of caution with my estimate.)

What can we expect from this non-cartoon version of Mulan? Well, for one thing, I think it is safe to bet that it will not be a shot-for-shot remake of Mulan II. (Now THAT'D be a choice. Yikes, amirite?) So uh, you can go ahead and exhale now. (OK, honesty time: I have not seen Mulan II. For all I know, the straight-to-DVD sequel to Mulan could be fantastic. I guess I shouldn't fire shots at it. Not without seeing it. That isn't fair. Sorry, Mulan II. Hope you can forgive me.)

Do I have some requests for the real people version of Mulan? As a matter of fact, I do. Let's get down to business:

It needs “Reflection” version 2.0

I want another slam dunk of a ballad. And I want Christina Aguilera to sing said slam dunk of a ballad. And I want said slam dunk of a ballad to play while the credits for the live-action Mulan roll.

Mushu better be a talking dragon

First things first, Mushu better be in this movie. Like, don't cut one of the best characters. Second, if Mushu is turned into a dragon who can’t chat it up with humans, it’d be a bummer. I want to hear all of Mushu's commentary and zingers. I'd be so disappointed if he couldn't talk.

Li Shang's gotta be a grade A hottie

Sorry not sorry, Li Shang is one of the hottest animated characters ever. Whoever the studio casts must be SMOKIN’ hot. Otherwise, audiences may riot.

Don't leave out the avalanche battle!

Whenever I think about Mulan, the avalanche scene is the first thing that comes to mind. Like the wildebeest scene in The Lion King, it's terrifying, stressful, and effing beautiful. I would love to see a real-life/CGI reinterpretation of this epic battle.

The training montage is a must

Uh, duh. Montages are THE BEST.
