Phil Coulson & Lance Hunter Team Up On 'Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.,' But What Are They Planning?

For a second there, I thought Phil Coulson was back in Tahiti. Was anyone else worried when they saw him on the beach? In the final scene of Tuesday's new episode of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., Coulson successfully recruited Lance Hunter, who had escaped "the real S.H.I.E.L.D." until his new boss could track him down. He signed a contract on a napkin and everything. However, to what cause is Hunter now employed? The rest of "Director" Coulson's team is currently being held by Bobbi Morse, Robert Gonzales, Anne Weaver, Mack, and the rest of the democratic faction of S.H.I.E.L.D.

I was hoping for a more legitimate reason as to why these Agents are so smugly calling themselves "the real S.H.I.E.L.D.," but it seems like they just gave themselves that title. Recently, this Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. plot has reminded me of the old comic strip Spy Versus Spy from Mad Magazine. If you're unfamiliar, the story depicted two spies that were always trying to best each other, but, aside from their color schemes, were virtually the same.

So, what are Coulson and Hunter planning? The two of them may be more alike than they think. Coulson is always at his best when he's a bit of a rogue like Hunter. Whatever their plan is to rescue the team and seize control of S.H.I.E.L.D. in Fury's name is sure to be unorthodox. It's going to be fun to watch them work together and discover that on their own.

Wait a second. Weeks ago, I predicted that Bobbi, Mack and Hunter were involved with S.T.R.I.K.E., the British equivalent of S.H.I.E.L.D. in Marvel comics that is lead by a character named Lance Hunter. However, what if I had it all wrong? Perhaps that's what we are witnessing the birth of right now with Lance and Coulson. Could they two of them start their own spy organization now that "the real S.H.I.E.L.D." has deemed their team illegitimate?
