5 Characters Nia Vardalos Could Play On 'JTV'

by Rosie Narasaki

Jane the Virgin has been doing pretty darn good on the casting front, eh? I mean, last week we got Actual Legend Rita Moreno taking a turn as Rogelio's helicopter mom, and in the past we've been treated to stars like Juanes, Paulina Rubio, and David Bisbal — the high-profile cameos just keep on coming! And guess who's visiting this week? Get ready for Nia Vardalos on Jane the Virgin ! Yep, the very, very fabulous star/screenwriter of My Big Fat Greek Wedding will be making her way to Miami in this week's new episode.

Now, here's the big question: Who will she play? Well, as it would turn out, things are still a little murky. In February, Variety reported that Vardalos would play Barbara, "a woman who plays a critical role in the relationship between Jane (Gina Rodriguez) and Rafael (Justin Baldoni) as it reaches a crossroads" — which is, don't get me wrong, very descriptive, but at the same time... it's not. All we've really got is that Barbara will somehow interact with Jane and Rafael — but how? Where? Why? And if things are at a crossroads, will she be convincing them to get back together, or telling them they're better off apart?

That's a lot of questions and few answers, so you know what that means: Time for some wild speculation! Here are five different people Vardalos might be playing.

A Doula

The concept of picking a doula has come up a few times over the last couple of episodes — in fact, it was one of the bones of contention leading up to Jane and Rafael's break-up. Maybe this particular doula will offer them sage relationship advice in addition to sage childbirthing advice.

Rafael's Aunt

Look, I would have guessed Vardalos was playing Rafael's mom if we hadn't just met her. That said, she could still turn out to be one of his relatives... perhaps an aunt?

Someone From Church

Last week's episode ended with Alba fretting about going on a date with a priest (played by Cheech Marin), so maybe Vardalos will be playing someone from his congregation!

A Writer

Jane's been getting advice from lots of cool lady writers lately — so why not add Vardalos (an actual cool lady writer) to the list? Ooh, maybe she'll be playing herself!

Andie's Mom

Sounds farfetched, sure — but I'm guessing that we'll be seeing more of Andie's Single White Female antics in the new episode, so meeting her mom is not entirely out of the question.

Those are my best guesses, but we'll just have to wait and see who Vardalos is going to play (and cross our fingers for a multi-episode arc).
