Solange Stuns In African-Inspired Gown

by Lauren Turner

Although I've never had to pick out a gown to wear to a red carpet event, I feel like a lot of thought would have to go into the decision. And Solange's BET Upfronts gown was definitely one that I think she picked out precisely for the scene. The more eclectic Knowles sister always goes for pieces that make you do a triple take, and I love each look that I get of it.

Solange showed up to truly get the party started by taking over the DJ booth in style. Wearing a front-focused gown from Maki Oh's Autumn Winter 15/16 collection, the dress holds textiles indicative of the African cultures they were inspired by. Featuring shiny straps, cup detailing, and a glimpse of three different fabrics in the deep slit, you don't know where to look. But somehow it manages to look great all together and not go too overboard. Paired with her big (beautiful) hair and matching color-blocked mules, she definitely won best dressed.

But aside from how amazing the dress looked on her, I love the fact that she went with an African designer. Putting together things from the different African localities and identities, she's bringing the culture to the front lines. And to me, that makes the dress that much more special. I just wish she didn't have to spend so much time in the booth, hiding her gorgeous gown.
