These 'Buffy' Outfits Are Completely Outdated

by Tracy Dye

As far as '90s teenage dramas go, Buffy the Vampire Slayer pretty much reigns supreme IMHO. I remember during my awkward teens (OK, I'm still pretty awkward, but as an adult I've finally come to embrace it), there was no better reprieve from such an ever-changing stage than racing home to see Buffy Summers deal with high school drama by day and slay vampires by night. Like any typical teen, she had her share of trials, tiffs, and complicated romances. Many of said romances involved hunky vampires (talk about a conflict of interest, eh?), which I believe is what initiated the trend of monstrous blood-sucking villains turning into heartthrobs. Move over, Twilight, Buffy was the first one to make us muse on what it would be like to have a vampire ask us to prom.

Another staple of Buffy was the revolving door of outfits and hairstyles that we — at the time — found to be the chicest ensembles any girl, guy, or vampire could ask for. Taking a look back at the series — which I do frequently via Netflix — we might find ourselves jolted by how far we have traveled fashion-wise from these ensembles since entering the 21st century. I, personally, still find these outfits pretty amazing but also amazingly outdated. Let's take a nostalgic look at the most outdated outfits from Buffy the Vampire Slayer that were so '90s, it hurts.

Sewn-On Daisies & Butterflies & Stuff

When it came to wearing any and everything girlie, my fave gal Willow was the Queen B. No one rocked flowers and butterflies like Sunnydale's resident good witch — no one.

Tube Tops

Back in the 90s, tube tops were probably as popular as...well...Buffy the Vampire Slayer. What I'm saying is, they were totally in. There was never enough double-sided tape in the world to convince me to give this look a go, though I always admired how Buffy could rock it like a boss. Seriously, guys, she slayed! Get it? Slayed? 'Cause she slayed vampires for a living.

Ahem, moving right along...

Knee-High Boots In The Summer

You live in Southern California and it's June, Buffy! You're calves must be sweating something terrible. It looks nice, though...

Denim Jackets

This one is actually a twofer, because Buffy paired a scrunchie with her denim jacket. Oh, '90s, how I miss you.

One Solid Color Head-to-Toe

No need to mix and match in the '90s. Although, Buffy's choice of all white may not be good for slaying vampires. Spike knows what I'm talking about.

Nabbing Justin Timberlake's *NSYNC Hairstyle

Or was it J.T. who nabbed Spike's style? Either way, the resemblance is uncanny.

Using Your Sweater As A Belt

Ah, those were the days.

Pretending To Be Billy Idol

Spike brought back the '80s in a big way. Also, is that a lock on his necklace? Um, yeah, marry me now please.

Chokers

Otherwise known as the turtlenecks of jewelry.

Dressing Like It Was The Renaissance...

...even when you weren't going to a renaissance festival.

Overalls

Why have jeans start at the waist when you can rock them at shoulder-level?

Loud Prints

To be honest, I find Xander and Oz's shirts in this GIF kind of phenomenal.

Every Shirt Xander Ever Wore

Silk shirts, Hawaiian shirts, and holiday sweaters even when it wasn't a holiday — Xander had them all. Seriously, though, I adored Xander, his shirts, and listening to him talk nerdy to us all for seven seasons.

Ribbed Sweaters

I actually still wear these and, oh hi, there's a scrunchie again.

Leather Everything

Leather gloves, leather jackets, leather pants, leather skirts — Buffy rocked them all.

Oversized Flannel Shirts

Comfort #FTW!

Spaghetti Straps

Otherwise known as dental floss for shirts. Sorry, I'm just bitter because so many of mine ended up popping off. R.I.P spaghetti-strap shirt I had in 1998. This pic also makes for a good twofer, because check out those sweet sparkly butterfly clips Buffy used to make her coif truly on fleek.
