Serious Stars Are In a Student-Made Film

by Kristie Rohwedder

James Franco and Mila Kunis are in another movie together, and no, I'm not talking about the Oz The Great and Powerful sequel. They are in Tar, a made by a whopping 12 New York University film students. Yes, the trailer for Tar is beautiful. I'm into it. But you know what else I'm into? The movie's all-star ensemble cast. As mentioned, Franco and Kunis are in it. Also billed? Jessica Chastain and Zach Braff. Those real-ass stars are in a movie made by film students. Color me intrigued. Those real-ass stars wouldn't sign up for any old student project, would they? They must've seen serious potential in the screenplay.

Tar is based on C.K. Williams's book of poetry by the same name. The film moves through the award-winning poet's life from the 40s to the 80s. I'm a tad curious as to whether or not the movie actually works, or if it falls victim to having "too many cooks in the kitchen." One dozen people sounds like a lot of opinions and ideas to navigate. One dozen people's worth, to be exact. Perhaps this particular team of creatives is really great at compromising? Either way, the trailer definitely piqued my interest. It's just so pretty! It doesn't hurt that my boo Franco is in the movie, either.
