A San Francisco 49er's quarterback isn't exactly where you'd look for men's fashion advice. There are tons of menswear Instagram accounts that offer amazing inspiration, and then there's the incorporation of menswear into women's wear that can give serious inspiration for you or your bf's looks. But a professional athlete's off duty style can be just as fantastic. Colin Kaepernick's love of fashion accessories is totally refreshing and cool. Kaepernick sat down with Women's Wear Daily to dish on men's fashion and remind us that sports stars can also be total fashion stars.
With Paris Men's Fashion Week just coming to an end, men's wear is on the brain for the vast majority of the fashion world. While some seriously fashionable ladies walked menswear runways, menswear is definitely still at the forefront right now. Men's style also seems to be on the mind of quarterback Colin Kaepernick as well. The sports star isn't the first to be seriously into fashion. Victor Cruz, wide receiver for the New York Giants, landed a deal with Givenchy recently as well. However, Kaepernick's love of men's wear falls more into the arena of accessories. The athelete owns 500 pairs of shoes and 300 hats, but he still has his favorites. He explains, "I rock a lot of snapbacks [in hats]. So that fits my style a little bit more. I feel it’s a little more versatile. Sneakers, I always wear Jordans. As far as going out, YSL are some of my favorites right now."
Kaepernick is said to have a more mild, quiet personality, but that can't be seen in his fashion choices. The athlete is covered in intricate and gorgeous tattoos— which really act as an accessory themselves— and rocks edgy menswear on the regular. When asked about the seeming disconnect in personality and style, he answers, "I don’t necessarily have to be shy with the way I dress or my appearances. I think being shy or a little bit more mild-mannered is more how you treat people and how you go about your business, not necessarily how you dress or things of that nature."
The football star goes on to explain that sports stars have the ability to get involved in fashion more often, and that's definitely true. Several athletes have already made the foray into fashion. The ESPY red carpet is a perfect example of how athletics and fashion can seamlessly come together. With the ESPY awards red carpet quickly approaching, let's looks at some sports stars who, like Kaepernick, are also killing it in the fashion world.
