In the wake of this week's reversal of Obama-era bathroom access protections for transgender students, it is so incredibly important to stand with trans and gender nonconforming youth on every platform possible. It may seem like a small gesture, but finding memes to share to support the trans community on social media can actually make a strong statement. That isn’t to say that social media activism can replace participating in rallies and protests or calling representatives — taking concrete action in whatever ways you're able to is essential — but showing solidarity across Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram can help create an atmosphere of acceptance, as well as let the administration know that we will continue to fight for safe education for all.
The federal guidelines issued in May of 2016 ensured that students attending any school that received government funding could use the bathroom and locker room that aligned with their gender identity. The Obama administration used the federal law Title IX, which protects against gender discrimination in schools to extend to the issue of bathroom use; however Trump's administration has challenged this position, claiming that the guidelines didn’t "contain extensive legal analysis or explain how the position is consistent with the express language of Title IX, nor did they undergo any formal public process." The White House has not released any further guidance for schools on the issue stoking further confusion as to what role the government may play in this issue.
A rollback of the Obama-era protections could mean a troubling increase in bullying and violence towards transgender students currently enrolled in the school system, warn civil rights activists. "The consequences of this decision will no doubt be heartbreaking," Chad Griffin, president of the Human Rights Campaign, told the New York Times. "This isn’t a states’ rights issue; it’s a civil rights issue." Since the announcement on Wednesday, the hashtag "Protect Trans Kids" has been trending on Twitter in a number of posts speaking out against the rollback of protections.
To show support for all trans and gender nonconforming people in this troubling time, take a moment to share one of these powerful memes on social media, and spread a little love and positivity.
