If you need a break from mourning Clay and Hannah's heart-wrenching almost romance on 13 Reasons Why, you may want to check out star Dylan Minnette's first single with the Wallows. He plays guitar and sings vocals for the Los Angeles-based band, which he formed with his friends Braeden Lemasters (guitar), Cole Preston (drums), and Zack Mendenhall (bass). They recently unveiled their debut track, "Pleaser," a sunny rock tune akin to alt veterans The Strokes and recent indie breakouts Hippo Campus.
But, as Refinery 29 points out, this is actually the third incarnation of the group. According to their bio on Atlanta venue Center Stage, they initially started in 2010 under the title The Feaver, but later switched their name to The Narwhals. Now, they've revamped under yet another moniker.
You may have heard them before: Back in 2014, they contributed a song called "Surf Surf Don't Drown" to the soundtrack of Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day, starring Steve Carrell and Jennifer Garner. They've also performed at famed venues like the Roxy, The Whisky a Go Go, the Troubadour, and the Viper Room. Their original work is similar to their new style, albeit a little heavier.
For Minnette, "Pleaser" couldn't hit at a better time. He's fresh off his critically lauded turn in 13 Reasons Why — which is already getting buzz for a second season — and, according to IMDb, is next slated to appear in James Franco's upcoming bio comedy, The Disaster Artist. Hopefully, his on-screen momentum will help jumpstart his music career, too.
