23 "Protect Trans Kids" Tweets Show Why Standing Up For Each Other Is So Urgent

President Donald Trump has overturned the previous administration's protections for transgender students, namely federal guidelines that gave transgender students the right to use the restroom of their choice. In the wake of Trump's decision, the "Protect Trans Kids" tweets prove why showing solidarity is so important in these trying times.

Education Secretary Betsy DeVos has said that her department “remains committed to investigating all claims of discrimination, bullying and harassment against those who are most vulnerable in our schools,” the Washington Post reported. But the overturning of these nondiscrimination guidelines sends the opposite message: that the protection of LGBT students is optional.

But it's very clearly not optional; 75 percent of transgender kids have reported not feeling safe in school, and nearly half of transgender people report attempting suicide, according to the Human Rights Campaign. Additionally, while the hashtag "Protect Trans Kids" is about showing solidarity with transgender youth, it has been attacked both by social conservatives and by trolls who celebrate Trump's decision. This seems exactly like the bullying and discrimination that the Obama administration's guidelines were meant to protect transgender students against.

Still, the original message of #ProtectTransKids stands strong despite these attacks. Here are some tweets that stand in solidarity with that message:
