The 7 Best Sex Positions For The Shower

Ad failed to load

Although it might not be the safest place to have sex, shower sex can be a lot of fun. You have the hot water to make things extra steamy, soap and body wash to make things extra slick and slippery, and it's a great way to start a long day or end a long day. Hell, it's even a great way to spice up the middle of a long day, if you live close enough to home and can get to your shower for a midday quickie — and quickies are incredible for both your health and your relationship.

While it's definitely a blast, shower sex can also be dangerous AF. So dangerous, in fact, that you can end up with more than just bruises, but even a trip to the ER... where you get to explain to the doctors on duty that your injuries were caused by your shower sex attempt, a feat that should automatically result in a medal of bravery, no matter how banged up you are but, sadly, doctors don't hand out medals for such things.

Still, shower sex may be worth the wee bit of danger it involves to you and your partner. So, before you venture into shower sex territory, it's important to have a plan. It involves some preparation (a bathmat with some heavy-duty suction, for starters) and, of course, the right sex positions.

1Standing Doggy Style

Caroline Wurtzel/Bustle

How to do it: With both you and your partner facing the same direction, bend over and have them enter you from behind. Depending on how flexible you are, you can put your hands on your knees or the floor of the shower, to support yourself. You'll probably need some lube, because water has a habit of diluting your natural vaginal lubrication.

Why it's great for the shower: Well, you're standing, so that right there makes it optimal for the shower. But you're also in a position in which you can both use the walls or the shower floor for support, therefore minimizing any accidental falls.

2In A Chair

Caroline Wurtzel/Bustle

How to do it: Grab a chair, put it in the shower, then straddle your partner, lowering yourself down onto them. You can do this either face them or face away from them. Whatever is most comfortable for both of you.

Why it's great for the shower: Now before you say out loud, "WTF," allow me to explain. I've done this one. When I was in Rome with my partner there was a small, plastic stool outside the shower that, we assumed, was for older guests so they could shower without falling. So, we did what any shower-sex-loving people do and put the stool in the shower so we could have sex on it. It was great! The only drawback was that, in being a stool and not having a back, it was a bit precarious. But had it been a proper chair with a proper back, it would have been fantastic. I highly recommend it.

3Standing

Caroline Wurtzel/Bustle

How to do it: Similar to the first position mentioned, you want both you and your partner standing and facing the same the direction. Again, have your partner enter you from behind, but instead of bending over this time, stay standing, using the wall for support.

Why it's great for the shower: I have to say, of all positions for shower sex, this is the best one. Neither one of you is doing anything fancy or difficult, and you have that wall to support you. If you've never tried shower sex, I'd say you should start with this position.

4On Top

Caroline Wurtzel/Bustle

How to do it: Unless your shower floor is made of a down comforter, and I highly doubt it is, you either want an extra thick bathmat or a towel before you proceed. Next, have your partner sit, with their knees bent, while you straddle them while facing them. Then lower yourself down onto them. That towel is going to give your knees the comfort they want to make this position extra hot — comfy.

Why it's great for the shower: Although we don't often think of sitting down positions when it comes to shower sex, this one works. It's an easy position (also a very friendly clitoral stimulation position), that doesn't involve standing so there are no worries about falling, and if you do it so the shower hits your back, your partner's face will be protected from getting a face-full of water. It's actually ideal for shower sex.

5The Proposal

Caroline Wurtzel/Bustle

How to do it: Once again, you want to make sure you have a towel or an extra thick bathmat to support your knees. Next, get on those knees and have your partner penetrate you from the same position they'd propose to you. Depending on the height difference, it will involve some finagling — more finagling if your partner is much taller.

Why it's great for the shower: Since you're not standing, there's no fear of falling. While you could technically tip over, if you don't use the walls for support, if that happens, you only have yourself to blame, because you should really be using those walls for support! Also, if the taller of the two of you has the shower against their back, then the shorter one won't get water in their face. Overall, it's just a great position for the shower — if you do it right, of course.

6Mutual Masturbation

Caroline Wurtzel/Bustle

How to do it: If you know how to masturbate, then you can both pull this one off no problem.

Why it's great for the shower: The fact that it doesn't involve penetrative sex, immediately cuts down on the danger factor. So you don't have to worry about that. Also, as is the case with masturbation, it's a sure thing, in regards to having an orgasm, so you both get off while enjoying watching each other getting off... in a hot steamy shower that will make you feel like you're starring in your very own Harlequin romance novel.

7Three-Legged Dog

Caroline Wurtzel/Bustle

How to do it: While facing each other, have your partner lift one of your legs so they can either hold it or cradle it in their arm. Next, have them penetrate you from here. Yes, you will be on one leg.

Why it's great for the shower: Truth be told, this particular position requires practice — practice outside the shower before you bring it inside the shower. But between the shower walls and each other, you can pull it off. Just make sure, in addition to using whatever you can as support and to balance yourselves, you communicate with your partner. If you start to feel off-balance, don't just try to fix it on your own or hope that your balance will magically come back. Instead, tell your partner, so you can work together to get your balance back on track and you don't end up falling over and seriously injuring yourselves.

Shower sex is great! But it does require preparation, effort, and communication. While sex injuries are common — even outside of the shower — as I said, they don't give out medals of bravery for such things like shower sex. Since that's the case, it's important to be extra careful while having all your shower sex fun.
