The MTV Movie & TV Awards Opening Is A '90s Kid's Dream

Adam Devine is known for his comedic and singing chops, and luckily for everyone watching, that's how Devine opened the MTV Movie & TV Awards with an amazing Beauty and the Beast performance. There was singing, dancing, great references, and, of course, plenty of guest stars.

Beauty and the Beast is the biggest movie of the year thus far, and it nabbed a slew of nominations, so pretty obvious that Adam Devine would embrace it during the show. He makes a mean Beast, by the way. But Devine is a sharer, so he brought some interesting guest stars with him — Lil Rey Howery (from Get Out) joined the number, along with Millie "Eleven" Bobby Brown, Workaholics star Blake Anderson, This Is Us star Chrissy Metz, Beauty and the Beast's Josh Gad, Luke Cage himself Mike Colter, Hailee Steinfeld, and Rebel Wilson. Everyone in the audience ate it up, and I especially liked the ode to Taraji P. Henson in which Devine and Steinfeld sang about the fact that she was nominated for both her role in Hidden Figures and her role on Empire, and which Taraji P. will rise to the top? Henson loved it, too, judging by her audience reaction.

Devine's opening act reminds me of the good old days of MTV, when music videos were played, people wore wacky outfits on the red carpet, and irreverent behavior was not only encouraged but expected. MTV bringing the MTV Movie & TV Awards back live is a step in the right direction, and Devine's opening was delightful, OK?

So, so good.
