Summer 2017 is about to get all kinds of exciting if you're as a big of a Star Wars fan as I am. According to Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy, the next Star Wars spinoff may be announced this summer. According to MTV's interview with Kennedy during the recent Star Wars Celebration in Orlando, she was able to discuss the possibility of a spinoff announcement being made very soon:

I think we’re getting close. My hope would be sometime around the summer. I never want to predict the creative process because it is its own thing, so we’re in the midst of those discussions right now.

While Kennedy gave no hint about a title to this third planned spinoff, it's absolutely exciting to know that we could be staring down the barrel of another Star Wars spinoff announcement being made very soon. If anything, we'd most likely learn what the third planned spinoff is about, rather than learn what the title is going to be. In the semi-unlikely event that Kennedy was bluffing and she knows for sure both what the title of the next spinoff will be as well as the subject of the spinoff, then this announcement would be very invigorating for Star Wars fans.

The Star Wars cinematic universe is an ever-evolving franchise, so there are plenty of directions for this spinoff to go in should the originally intended Boba Fett spinoff not resume production. It's definitely a possibility that Lucasfilm would scrap those plans entirely and do something totally fresh, like an Obi-Wan Kenobi spin-off, as suggested by MTV's Josh Horowitz when he was chatting with Kennedy.

There's so many unexplored corners of the Star Wars cinematic universe, that my only hope here is that Lucasfilm sees the opportunity to get creative with this spinoff. I'm obviously jonesing for a surprise summertime announcement, but make it count, Lucasfilm. Make it count.
