About Those "Strong" Lyrics...

by Tobi Gbile

If you say that you saw this coming, you're totally lying, because I most definitely would never have guessed that after everything they have been through, Justin Bieber and Selena Gomez would record a surprise duet. The heartfelt, stripped down duet "Strong" was leaked on OVO Sound Radio, Soundcloud, and YouTube on Saturday night, much to fans' surprise and shock. Although all of the links have been removed from the Internet due to copyright infringement, the lyrics of Bieber and Gomez's "Strong" remain. It's time to do a good, old fashioned, lyric analysis and find out once and for all, what do you mean, Bieber and Gomez?

Back when they were together, the young celebs had one of the most publicized romances in the entertainment world, and their rollercoaster of a relationship constantly made headlines (their numerous splits made even more). Now, months after what appears to be their final separation, both Bieber and the "Good For You" songstress have been very vocal about the details of their public relationship. Although they clearly had many ups and downs, Bieber, in a tell-all interview with Complex, revealed that they had been very much in love, which made it hard for them to be apart. Said Bieber, "We were all about each other. But when it's like that and you get your value from that, people will always disappoint you. Your girl or your dude, they're always going to disappoint you."

Due to statements like these, it should come as no surprise that I am eager to dive into the lyrics of "Strong" to try and see what hidden messages these two former lovers might be trying to convey to their fans. As of now, it is unclear whether or not this track will be on Bieber's comeback album Purpose. Regardless, though, it should come as no shock to anyone that he and Gomez are apparently telling the story of their complicated relationship through song. First, there's this verse:

[Selena]There's no sophistication in my lack of patienceI'm just wishing you were better at communicationAs I sit here steady waitingWishing that you would call my name in

This verse looks like it could be explaining a few of the reasons why Bieber and Gomez have broken up in the past. It is possible that she is singing about how she is annoyed with herself for not being patient with Bieber when he failed to communicate with her during their relationship. This could have been as a result of their busy schedules as teen sensations, making it hard for them to see each other as much as they would have liked to, resulting in hurt feelings and miscommunication on both sides.

Then, there's this, sung in turn by both Bieber and Gomez:

(Wishing I was better with the distance)It's cause you're the only one I'm really missingNobody else would be forgivingCause of all the love that you give meAll of the love that you give meAll of the love that you give me, give me(Wishing I was better at this damn thingCause it's just been too long and I can't change)Wishing I was better at this damn thingCause it's just been too long and I can't change

The chorus indicates how attached the pair were to each other. Just like Bieber has mentioned in the past, their relationship really seems to have been quite strong. It also appears that they wished that they were better at this whole "love" thing, and that they had been together too long and set in their ways for so long that it made it hard for them to change.

[Justin Bieber]What should I do? Should I go?Who do I talk to? Nobody knowsWho knows the answer to all of my questions? When will I get over this, over this?

Here, it looks like Bieber is asking himself where he can go to find support in this hectic love they shared. Since he was living in the spotlight, I wouldn't be surprised if there were not many people he could trust and turn to in times like these. Bieber appears to be lost and unsure of who he can turn to for help, leaving him feeling lonely.

After taking a deeper look at these lyrics, it's clear that there is a lot more than meets the eye. If my interpretation is even near correct, then there are probably a lot of things that fans were completely unaware of in this relationship. Fingers crossed that "Strong" appears on the album so we can listen to it again and again.
