This 'Degrassi'/Drake Mashup Is A Must-See

by Kaitlin Reilly

When you think of today's rap superstars, rarely do you think of a certain Canadian teen soap — unless you're thinking of Drake, of course. It's hardly a secret that one of the most famous rappers on the planet once spent seven years as one of the stars of Degrassi: The Next Generation , even if Drake himself would probably prefer it being talked about just a little bit less. Unfortunately for Drake, the "Drake was on Degrassi " jokes will never die, which is exactly how I, a self-proclaimed Degrassi superfan, would like it to stay. It seems that the Internet is totally on board with these constant reminders that Drake once played Degrassi's very own Jimmy Brooks, and the latest Degrassi -meets-Drake parody "Whatever It Drakes" is exactly what the world needed.

I'm already kicking myself for not coming up with the elegant pun "Whatever It Drakes," which is a play on the Degrassi theme song "Whatever It Takes." (So simple! So brilliant! Why didn't I think of this first?) The video, which was created by writer and @Midnight staffer Demi Adejuyigbe, is a mashup of some of Drake's greatest hits layered on top of the — what else? — Degrassi theme song. Here's the video in all of its glory:

Like a sprained ankle, this video is nothing to play with — it's the perfect homage to Drake's past and I'm extremely sad that no one came up with this the second Drake's first album dropped. That's not to say that Drake hasn't been the subject of many Degrassi memes in the past: this little tidbit of knowledge about Drake's life is pure Internet fodder, even if you don't know your Jimmy Brooks from your Spinner Mason.

Truth be told, we're all just blessed to live in a world where former Canadian teen stars can go on to live great lives as successful rap artists — not that Drake wasn't honing his rap skills on Degrassi in the first place. Being the super Degrassi fan that I am (yes, I said am, and not was, because there's zero shame in that game) I know that Jimmy was busting rhymes way before anyone knew Drake could rap in real life. Check it out:

(Ashley probably wouldn't be so upset for a surprise drop-in by Drake. Just saying.)

Congrats on all of your success, Drake. You'll always be Jimmy to me.
