What Your Bookshelf Says About Your Personality

by Alex Weiss

The types of books you read say a lot about who you are as a person, but I bet you didn't expect that your bookshelf (or, OK, let's be more realistic: bookshelves) can say just as much. More than an entire bedroom, a bookshelf can reveal someone's interests, or how organized they tend to be. A bookshelf is, in a way, like a mirror.

As you've grown up a book-lover, your bookshelf has has also grown up with you. Whether your favorite childhood books are still on the shelves or not, what matters is that it reflects who you are as a person. My stuff is a mix of alphabetized and compact, mostly because I tend to lend my books to friends and forget to ask for them back. But whatever it says about me, I love my bookshelf and I love adding new books to it. I also enjoy giving away older books that don't mean as much to me anymore. I have a few friends who have massive bookshelves and collections that would probably win out some smaller libraries. Every bookshelf is different and unique, which I think is sort of awesome.

Whether you're a color-coordination addict or knick-knack collector, find your bookshelf style and see what it says about you:

Alphabetized

You have a classically alphabetized bookshelf. It's not too small, not to big, but just right. You're the Goldilocks in life. You like to have a schedule and are always up-to-date on your planner. One of your many known skills is problem solving, which means you're almost always the friend that everyone goes to for advice. Above all, you're classy and you know it.

Color Coordinated

Your bookshelf is basically a rainbow, and you wouldn't want it any other way. You've always been told how creative you are and it's one of your best traits. Even if you aren't an artist, you still love doing DIY crafts every now and then. When life gives you two different paths to follow, you don't take either; instead, you create a path of your own.

Cluttered And Full

You have books stacked on top of each other, leaning sideways, and some shoved into the tiny corners of space you have left. While it may not look organized, it's beautiful to you. You've never cared so much about what's on the outside or how someone looks, it's all about what's inside and the personality that goes along with it. Apart from your big book collection, you also have a ton of board games that you love to play with close friends on fun nights in.

Bright And Colorful

All your books are colorful, including your bookshelf and the decorations that match it. You probably have, or at least thought of putting twinkle lights on your bookshelf. You're often told you're adorable and whimsical, even when you try your best not to be. Your sweet personality means you're exceptionally good at being polite in any situation. You're the Luna Lovegood of people which makes you charmingly odd, in all of the best of ways.

Dark And Mysterious

If your bookshelf is dark and the books inside match, chances are you are more into mystery, sci-fi, and horror books. You like that your bookshelf isn't the centerpiece of your room, but rather something that blends in. Even though you like to be a mystery yourself, you love talking to new people and sharing your interests. Not everyone gets you, but the ones that do are your closest friends, and you wouldn't want it any other way.

Unique And Covered In Knick-Knacks

Your bookshelf has more snow globes and figurines than books. You love your books, but you also love displaying other important objects you've collected or have been gifted over the years. When you were a kid you found fascination in the smallest of details in found rocks and seashells, and you're still the same way. You often reminisce on the past, and sometimes wonder if you aren't living enough in the present, but because of that you have a great memory and tell the best stories.

Simple And Small

Your bookshelf isn't exactly large, nor is it full. This doesn't mean you don't love reading, it means you love lending books to your friends and using the library or your Kindle more than traditional reading. You hate clutter and living with other people who have more stuff than they need. You're frugal with money and material objects. Shopping may not be your thing, but like your bookshelf, you enjoy the simplest things life has to offer.

Massive Library Status

Your bookshelves are basically the wallpaper to your home. You can't remember a time when you weren't surrounded by books. You're the type of person who loves to make grand gestures to show your love for your friends and family. You're known to be competitive, but deep down, you care most about getting to read an entire book after a long day of work.
