J.K. Rowling Loves This Brexit-Themed Erotica

by Emma Oulton

Wow, here's a sentence I never thought I'd say: there's a new erotic novel about Brexit — and J.K. Rowling loves it. As a U.K. citizen myself, I can vouch for the fact that Brexit is a truly terrible idea, and that ever since the referendum, I have been in despair for my country. But at long last, a glimmer of happiness. It's been a pretty rubbish week, but Chuck Tingle's erotic book Pounded by the Pound has finally given me something to smile about.

J.K. Rowling tweeted about the book on Sunday, saying that it had finally given her "something to laugh about in this whole terrible mess" — and I feel pretty much the same way. Pounded by the Pound: Turned Gay by the Socioeconomic Implications of Britain Leaving the E.U. is part erotica, part sci-fi, and part action novel. It follows a man named Alex who falls in lust with a giant living pound coin, who tells him about the horrors of the not-too-distant future after Britain has left the E.U. Together, the two lovers must travel back in time to reverse the vote; it's a pretty urgent mission, but at least there's plenty of time for them to get steamy along the way.

I know the Internet is a wild and crazy place, and there's erotica of pretty much everything out there — but I'm fairly certain this is the first ever "human on monetary unit" porn (as Chuck Tingle himself describes it in the blurb) ever to grace the pages of a book.

But it's not just the book that was making J.K. Rowling so happy; there was also one particular review that made her laugh. Those of us in the Remain camp are getting hugely frustrated by Brexiters coming forward to say they regret their decision to vote Leave, because they didn't realize that the Leave voters would actually win — and one Amazon user perfectly parodied that with their own awkward review. "I picked this book as a protest," they wrote. "I didn't think I'd actually GET it."
