Oscars 2014: Margot Robbie's Major Style Switchup

by Mary Avant

It may have only been two months since the 2014 Golden Globes took place, but it seems like a lifetime since we saw The Wolf of Wall Street star Margot Robbie make her awards show debut at the first ceremony of the awards season. That may be why we could hardly believe our eyes when the former blonde revealed a dramatic — and dramatically different — new look on the 2014 Oscars red carpet.

Making her dark-headed debut on the red carpet in a black Saint Laurent by Hedi Silmane gown — which featured a sequined bodice in front, plus a big bow and cutout in the back — the Australian actress kept her brunette tresses in glamorous, Old Hollywood curls and complemented the dark look with a deep purple lips, bold brows, and a simple diamond necklace.

The all-black look gave off a dark, mysterious vibe on the red carpet, which was a total departure from the ensemble we saw her in at the 2014 Golden Globes, when she made her first awards-show appearance in a white, deeply-plunging Gucci gown; gorgeous green heels; and swept-up blonde locks. The outfit was even noticeably edgier than the black lace Elie Saab jumpsuit Robbie sported just days later at the Critics’ Choice Awards.

We did expect to see Robbie looking a little different at the Oscars, thanks to the fact that she recently dyed her blonde locks a dark brown for her upcoming role in Z for Zachariah. And while we were anticipating a shift in styling due to her new hair color, we have to admit: We never could have predicted she would show off a look that was the outright antithesis of the polished, almost ladylike outfits we became accustomed to at both the Golden Globes and several of The Wolf of Wall Street premieres. In fact, the new hair color gives Robbie a whole new style personality altogether — one that’s dark, daring, and beautifully edgy.

Perhaps the fact that she took a hiatus from many of the season's awards shows is what made her new look at the Oscars so shocking. But with this new twist on the rising star's red carpet fashion, we can't wait to see what bold, dark, and daring looks she has planned for future appearances — at least until she goes back to her blonde roots, that is.
