Since her first appearance in 1961's 101 Dalmatians, Cruella de Vil has been known for her villainous manor, impeccable fashion taste, and penchant for Dalmatian fur. Starring Emma Stone, Disney's Cruella offers insight on how she became the evil mastermind we know her as today.

The film follows de Vil as an aspiring fashion designer working to establish herself in 1970s New York. To bring the villain's passion for fashion to life onscreen, Oscar-winning costume designer Jenny Beavan crafted many elaborate and edgy looks for Stone's portrayal.

“We know where [Cruella] ends up about 15 years later — as Glenn Close, obviously. In my mind, it had to just be possible that this character could become that character,” Beavan told Bustle, noting that edgy designers like Vivienne Westwood and John Galliano inspired her.

On Twitter, fans highlighted the actors' performances as well as Beavan's costume design. “Whoever was in charge of Emma Stone's wardrobe UNDERSTOOD the assignment... And I'd be shocked if Cruella isn't nominated for Costume Design next year,” wrote one viewer.

In the film, de Vil's big break is working for esteemed designer Baroness von Hellman, played by Emma Thompson. Beaven noted that she's “a very good designer... just slightly past her sell-by date” and described her style as “obviously asymmetric, very fitted, and very snobbish.”

Viewers were mesmerized by Thompson's performance, which was clearly elevated by her extravagant style. “No thoughts just Emma Thompson’s serve in Cruella,” posted one viewer, while another called for “more villains with a BETTER SENSE OF FASHION than everybody else please.”

Giving the movie an ecstatic 10/10 rating, a fan tweeted: “Emma Stone is phenomenal ... Cruella is basically Joker meets The Devil Wears Prada! The cinematography here is amazing! Cruella is the best Disney villain movie! Cruella is a fashion masterpiece!”

Chronicling de Vil's wicked ascent up the fashion industry's corporate ladder, fans praised Cruella for its "incredibly great gaslight gatekeep girlboss" energy. "Cruella being a gaslighting girlboss was a bold choice for Disney and I think I loved it," expressed another viewer.

However, the simple pantsuit Stone wore to Cruella's premiere disappointed some fans. “After watching Cruella I’m even more upset that our dear Emma chose to wear this at the red carpet when these were the movie’s costumes... She could’ve asked Disney to borrow one of the looks.”

There’s no doubt that people will recreate Stone’s Cruella de Vil for Halloween this year, but one fan noted the difficulty of choosing a look: “The costumes in Cruella are so incredible, I don't even know which to even go with to cosplay. Seriously, how do I pick just one???”

While the film's script and portrayal of Dalmatians have drawn some criticism, fans clearly enjoyed the watching experience. “Cruella is literally the most fun movie I’ve seen all year the fashion the drama mama this is peak camp and def worth true iconicity,” tweeted a viewer.
