How The Fashion Industry Reacted To Cecil's Death

by Marc Cuenco

There's no doubt that the death of Cecil The Lion in the hands of American dentist Walter Palmer sent shock waves across the globe. The heartbreaking tragedy of an innocent animal's senseless killing was even felt in the fashion world, which mourned the loss of Cecil The Lion by way of social media. Two of the most outspoken members of the industry also happen to have a cultural connection to the fallen feline: African models Candice Swanepoel and Behati Prinsloo.

"How dare you Walter Palmer," Swanepoel said. "As a South African, and as a human being, I can't express how deeply saddened I am by this. What pleasure do you get out of doing such a thing? Seeing these animals alive in their natural habitats is such a blessing, you have to be so sick to want to kill such a majestic creature of God. You come to Africa with your dollars and euros thinking you can buy power by taking advantage of Africa's poverty and paying people to help you kill an innocent creature. Disgusting! I hope you get what you deserve." Meanwhile, fellow Victoria's Secret Angel Prinsloo echoed the anger of thousands of others with a stern warning for Palmer and other hunters: "Stay out of Africa!!!!"

With pro-animal celebrities like Betty White and Jimmy Kimmel making more people aware that keeping wildlife safe from hunters all over the world should be everyone's cause, it's amazing to see the fashion world react the way it did after Cecil's killing made the news. The industry has long been criticized for mistreating and exploiting animals, so it's good to know that there are big names in fashion who are fighting for such an important cause and are vocalizing their outrage to end these senseless and inhumane acts.

Don't mess with Iman, hunters.
