Before you know it, it'll be time to totally "revamp" your makeup — especially your lippies. Cooler weather invites darker colors and more matte formulas, and Hilary Duff's berry-stained lipstick (aka "vamp lip") reminded me that the autumn season is upon us. Duff got a head start on the seasonal style and she did so flawlessly.
Duff often prefers a nude or pink glossy lip, so to see her going dark with her lip hue is certainly a rarity. She did pair a tomato red lip with her blue mermaid hair earlier this summer, but it wasn't nearly as extreme as this matte, dusty lavender — which I'm totally digging. Even though it's not the boldest of all bold lips, it's a striking change for Duff. As a fan of nude lipstick myself, I'm actually pretty tempted to try a dark purple shade after seeing this photo.
The singer, actress, and mom of Luca is back to her golden blonde tresses and this merlot lipstick pops against her hair and skin. I love her beachy waves and the fact that she was wearing minimal makeup — aside from that pop of purple.
Duff slightly accentuated her lashes, but otherwise her perfectly painted pucker was the focus of this photo and of her look. Given the rich color, Duff likely kept things in check with lip liner, wisely so.
She looks like a romantic goddess. The only thing missing is a crown of flowers in her hair.
The glossy, nude lips is more of a Duff signature. But it is indeed fresh and fab when she diverts from her usual look.
She can be counted on to keep it soft.
The multi-hyphenate knows her way around a rad contrast.
But the pink pout remains the standby.
If you want to do a berry lip like Duff, here are three options that suit all skintones, IMO.
1. Urban Decay Venom
This rosy berry in the Revolution line is perfect for when all you want to wear on your face is lipstick. It will brighten your face without much effort or product. Plus, it glides right on, like a super opaque gloss. ($22, urbandecay.com)
2. MAC Quelle Surprise
This Cremesheen lipstick by MAC is also universally flattering. If the concentrated color scares you, try this hack: Trace lips with a liner in the same shade. Apply lipstick directly to the lip from the bullet. Blot generously and carefully with a tissue wrapped around your pointer finger. It'll leave you with an unbelievably soft stain. ($16, maccosmetics.com)
3. NARS Liv
NARS' Audacious Lipstick in Liv is a deep aubergine. It can be dialed up or down in intensity depending on how many layers you apply. A single layer provides plenty of pop, but adding more swipes across the lips means more sexy. Use a liner, though, to keep things in place and to prevent feathering or bleeding. ($32,narscosmetics.com)
There's all the ammo you need to replicate Hilary Duff's fall-ready, vampy lip. Aren't you ready to leave a berry lipstick kiss behind on the rim of your Pumpkin Spice latte?
