"Subway Jared" Agrees To Plead Guilty
Weeks after FBI investigators raided the home of beloved longtime Subway spokesperson Jared Fogle in connection to a child pornography investigation, FOX 59 reports that Fogle will plead guilty to owning child pornography. Fogle is expected to take a plea deal, the details of which will be announced Tuesday by the U.S. Attorney's office, in regard to charges of owning child pornography. If he does plead guilty, he could face a number of years in prison. (Update: Fogle agreed to plead guilty Wednesday morning to paying for sex acts with minors and possessing child pornography, the Associated Press reports.)
On Wednesday morning, documents released by the U.S. attorney's office revealed that Fogle is expected to plead guilty to one count of travel to engage in illicit sexual conduct with a minor, and one count of receiving and distributing child pornography. The plea deal involves Fogle paying $1.4 million in restitution to 14 victims. He will also register as a sex offender, and will receive treatment. He will spend at least five years in prison, with the authorities pushing for more, the AP reports.
During the raid on Fogle's house in July, authorities confiscated televisions and DVDs. Hours later, Subway abruptly suspended its partnership with Fogle after 15 years together. In a statement, the company said: "Subway and Jared Fogle have mutually agreed to suspend their relationship due to the current investigation ... Jared continues to cooperate with authorities and he expects no actions to be forthcoming." References to Fogle were promptly wiped from the site and its stores. As of Wednesday, Subway has cut ties completely with Fogle.
Fogle's home was initially raided in connection to a child pornography investigation involving the executive director of the Jared Foundation, a nonprofit which Fogle had set up to combat childhood obesity. Russell Taylor, the former director, was charged with both producing and possessing child pornography, and FOX 59 reports that hundreds of videos of that nature were found in his home in April. The investigation was then expanded to include Fogle, and Fogle was in turn charged with possession of child porn. Taylor attempted to kill himself in custody, but wasn't successful.
At the beginning of August, Subway tweeted: "The latest allegation about Jared Fogle, if true, is appalling. As previously stated, we have suspended our relationship with Jared."
WRTV reports that Fogle could now face eight years behind bars, leaving behind his wife and two children.
