Could Wolverine Be The Next Odysseus?

by Kristie Rohwedder

Big news for Homer fans, and no, I'm not talkin' about The Simpsons: Hugh Jackman could be our next Odysseus. According to Variety, the X-Men: Days of Future Paststar is “in negotiations” to play the titular role in a feature film adaptation of Homer’s The Odyssey. Oh, I could dig that. I could definitely dig that. If Wolverine Valjean were to end up the lead in Lionsgate’s take on the epic poem, it would be, dare I say it, epic.

However, I do have one casting request. Well technically, I have threecasting requests: Vanessa Williams, Bernadette Peters, and Isabella Rossellini. Please and thank you.

I am but of course referring to 1997’s The Odyssey, the made-for-TV adaptation of Homer’s classic tale. For those of you whose high school English teachers weren't benevolent enough to devote a week of class to watching the two-part miniseries, allow me to enlighten you: In the Emmy Award-winning adaptation, Vanessa Williams plays Calypso, Odysseus’s captor; Bernadette Peters portrays Circe, the Goddess of Magic; and Isabella Rossellini is Athena, the Goddess of War.

If you're like, "Wait. Those casting choices are too overwhelmingly perfect to be real. I don't know if I believe you," I get it. I get your skepticism. If I wasn't familiar with this miniseries, I wouldn't believe me, either.

That's why I showed up to this rodeo with proof in my holster:

The trailer is just a snippet of the flawless performances given by Peters, Rossellini, and Williams. They set the bar at a wildly high height. If I'm being perfectly honest, I don't know if it's possible to top what that trio did in the miniseries.

...Unless Bernadette, Isabella, and Vanessa reprise the iconic roles they brought to life two decades ago, that is. Is it too unreasonable to want to see this goddess play Circe again?

Is it to unreasonable to want to see this goddess play Athena again?

Is it too unreasonable to want to see this goddess play Calypso again?

IMHO (in my Homeric opinion), I'm being totally reasonable. Also? It's been way too long since I last watched the '97 miniseries. Looks like I know what I'll be doing this weekend!
