British Airways Flight Catches Fire

by Jenny Hollander

On Wednesday, a plane caught fire on the tarmac at Las Vegas McCarran International Airport. One of the British Airways plane's engines apparently burst into flame before it even left the ground, although no serious injuries have been reported. The plane is a Boeing 777 jet that had been bound for London, and seats 275 people, according to Fox 5 Vegas. In a statement, the airport said that 159 passengers and 13 crew members were on the plane at the time. The plane was evacuated through its emergency slide, according to the New York Daily News.

Two people were taken to the hospital for treatment of minor injuries. A runway at McCarran was shut down after the incident. The flight was about to take off when the engine caught fire, prompting the evacuation. The airport said that the fire was put out at nearly 4.30 p.m. local time — roughly a half-hour after the plane was scheduled to leave for London.
