Wednesday marked the September live event from Apple where the company revealed new and improved products, an event that has now become a tradition in the tech industry. Fans of Apple were eagerly awaiting an up-close look at the features of the new iPhone 6S and iPhone 6S Plus. With all current technology, and Apple in particular, everyone is always looking to see what's new, and what will come next; plenty of people buy each new iPhone right when it comes out, even when it hasn't been so long since the last iPhone came out. Even now that the iPhone 6S and 6S Plus have just been officially revealed, questions are already swirling about when the iPhone 7 will be released. Based on Apple's typical iPhone behavior, it might not be that far into the future.
Of course Apple won't officially spill the beans this early, but past iPhone reveals have left a trail of clues that we can follow right to a speculative date that we might get to see the iPhone 7. Based on information we have about past iPhones I think I can predict when Apple users will be clambering to get their hands on the iPhone 7.
So let's do some Apple math and take a look at when the world was given the last few iPhones. The iPhone 4 came out on June 24, 2010, and the iPhone 5 was available to the public a bit over two years later on Sept. 21, 2012, (the time difference is 2 years, 2 months, and 29 days to be precise). Next, of course, came the iPhone 6 on September 19, 2014, which is a difference of 1 year, 11 months, and 28 days from the release of the iPhone 5.
Averaging out the differences between these release dates, we get an estimated release date of November 7, 2017 (just in time for the holidays!). However, the average might not be getting us the most accurate guess. 2017 seems like the right year (the difference between the release of the iPhone 5 and the iPhone 6 was also two calendar years), but November seems too late, given that Apple has generally released the next generation of their phones in the month of September. And many people are already speculating that the iPhone 7 will come out in 2016.
If we suppose that Apple will continue with a September release date, I'm going to guesstimate that the iPhone 7 will be available for purchase on Friday, September 22, 2017. So there it is! Mark your iCalendars for that date, and we'll find out in about two years if I was on the money.
