'The Mindy Project' Burgers, In A Few Simple Steps

by Arielle Dachille

We literally can't contain our excitement over Dr. Mindy Lahiri's triumphant return to television. And the long wait is over! Season 4 of The Mindy Project premieres on Hulu today, Sept. 15, which calls for some applicable noshing material. In this installment of DeVouR, we're recreating Mindy Kaling's signature Umami burgers for your tasting and viewing pleasure. They're just what the doctor ordered. (Sorry. Had to.)

Just in case you haven't heard of the comedy writer's collaboration with Umami Burger, allow me to enlighten you to this life-changing food news. Back in January, Kaling announced that she was teaming up with the cult fast food artisan to create a Mindy Burger. The very special burger, which was released this September, brings together an all-beef patty, Sriracha mayo, fried onions, pickled jalapeños and cheddar on a brioche bun. It'll make your tastebuds exceedingly happy, and is sure to provide the perfect culinary complement to your Mindy premiere viewing party.

But in the event that you don't have an Umami Burger in your neighborhood, you're probably experiencing some serious FOMO right now. Lucky for you, our lifestyle expert Jenna Wexler has the skinny on how to make the Mindy Burger from the comfort of your own home.

What You'll Need

We used the official recipe, which makes four burgers.

For The Burgers:

  • 4 brioche buns (our bakery was sadly out, so we substituted with potato)
  • 1/4 cup pickled jalapeño slices
  • 4 slices white cheddar cheese
  • 1 1/2 pounds ground beef (we used an organic, 85:15 fat ratio variety)
  • Salt & pepper
  • Butter

For The Fried Onion Strings:

  • One yellow onion (white or sweet would also work), cut into thin strips
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • 1 cup all-purpose or tempura flour
  • 1/2 teaspoon smoked paprika
  • 1 pinch smoked salt
  • Vegetable oil

For The Sriracha Aioli:

  • 2 tablespoons Sriracha
  • 1 cup mayonnaise
  • 1/2 lemon, juiced
  • 1 clove garlic, minced

1. Soak, Batter, and Deep-Fry Your Onion Strings.

Slice your onion into thin strips. Don't worry if they aren't completely uniform, but try to keep their thickness consistent.

In a medium bowl, cover onions with buttermilk and let soak for a few hours.

Deep fry in vegetable oil (using a deep fryer or cast-iron skillet), until golden brown.

2. Mix Your Aioli.

Mix mayonnaise, lemon juice, garlic, and Sriracha in a small bowl. Refrigerate until ready to use.

3. Season, Grill, And Cheese Your Burgers.

Form your patties and season each side generously with salt and pepper.

Cook on medium-high in a skillet or grill, and top with cheese for the last couple minutes, until melted.

4. Build Your Burgers.

Butter and toast each bun, then spread Sriracha aioli on both halves

Place your burger on the lower half bun, and top with crispy onions.

Top that with several pickled jalapeño slices, and then with your top bun.

Ta-da! Totally tasty, and completely Mindy-approved.
