Jamie Lee Curtis May Have Invented Instagram

by Jennifer Still

I, like most people, have a love/hate relationship with social media. While I use Twitter and Facebook, it's Instagram that truly has my heart. Sure, people post obnoxious selfies and overuse hashtags sometimes, but it's a great way to create your own personal scrapbook of what's going on in life, which is great to look back on months or years from now. Plus, human beings are visual creatures, and who doesn't love looking through pictures of cute hairstyles, fancy breakfasts, and exotic locales? No one, that's who. Turns out, Jamie Lee Curtis was a bit ahead of the curve when it comes to our love of photographs and she may have invented Instagram years before the app actually launched! Say what?!

In an interview with Sirius XM’s EW Radio, Curtis revealed that she and a few friends launched a site back in 2010 on which they shared endless photos they took on their iPhones, so she basically "invented Instagram". Called iPhoneys, it contained pictures they took around Los Angeles, during their travels, and just while out and about in Los Angeles. The site hasn't been updated since 2012, but that's only because that's when the group became obsessed with Instagram and just started posting all their snaps there (and in fact, many of the later posts on iPhoneys were clearly given the Instagram filter treatment).

“Funny enough, really the day that Instagram was announced is the day that they stop because as soon as that was available, that’s all we did.”

Of course, given her love of amateur photography, it's no surprise that she's embraced Instagram so whole-heartedly. She's pretty active on her page, sharing shots from sets and red carpets, as well as random snaps from her everyday life. While many celebs seem to be reluctant about their involvement with social media — and who could blame them, given how pervasive it can be? — Curtis has dived in head first, and it makes her Instagram account a ton of fun to scroll. She's also an avid Twitter user, and basically an awesome human being.

So did Jamie Lee Curtis invent Instagram? Maybe! Either way, I'm glad it exists and that she's on it. She's one of the most humble, down-to-earth celebs out there, and it's always fascinating to take a peek into how the Hollywood crowd lives their lives, that's for sure. If you're not already following her, I recommend doing that now.
