How To Achieve Margiela's Crazy Runway Makeup

by Jessica Willingham

The runway is not known for playing it safe. Wild hair, crazy makeup, and props out of this world are common during fashion presentations, and the most recent Margiela show did not disappoint. Perhaps some of the craziest looks I've seen in a while, Maison Margiela's bold, metallic makeup was hard not to love. Although it's all sorts of crazy, I think you can definitely achieve an inspired look you can wear out in the real world.

Makeup artist Pat McGrath was the brilliant mind behind these galaxy-inspired eye looks on the Margiela runway show, according to The Cut. Metallics, silvers, and blues dominated the models' looks and were highly textured to create a lead-like printed appearance. It was all otherworldly and entirely high-tech. Artist McGrath paired the high-intensity eyes with berry stained lips. For every sharp edge, there was a balancing soft blur of color, leaving a mysterious, yet exciting look to gaze at. It was extreme, to say the least.

Of course, drawing giant silver triangles on your face isn't too realistic for the office. Still, you can take those magical looks and use them as inspiration. You can steal the same look, but create a toned down version by just looking at the colors themselves or the application and shapes McGrath used.

Here are some of the top looks from the runway show and how you can achieve it on a more day-to-day scale. You'll look stunning and not scary, so have fun with it!

1. The Blue Statement Eye

You can achieve this blue hue look by sweeping a blue shadow across your eye, and then applying a highlight shade the middle of the lid to add sparkle, warmth, and to make your eyes look bigger so they're center of attention.

2. The Silver Under Eye

Conquer the silver look by lining your lower lash line with a vanilla eye pencil, and then buffing that out with a silver shadow using a small pencil brush. This look will make you look more awake and ready to conquer the day.

3. The Center Highlighted Lip

This lip look seems to highlight only the center of your lips, but in reality it makes your whole pout look larger and more luscious! Apply a nude lipstick to your upper and lower lip, and then dab a berry colored stain on the center of your lips. Use the pad of your finger to buff it into your lip and create a seamless center pout.
