These The Splat Moments Were Dicey As Hell

by Kristie Rohwedder

If you did not watch the first night of The Splat, you really missed out on one a heck of a trip down memory lane, you golden monkey inside a box of Google Puffs, you! The first eight hours of programming devoted to beloved 1990s Nickelodeon shows featured episodes of The Adventures of Pete & Pete, Kenan & Kel, Doug, and The Ren & Stimpy Show, plus long-running sketch comedy series You Can’t Do That On Television. Given the structure of The Splat, I ended up watching each episode twice over the course of eight hours. Was it fun? Of course. That being said, there were a few moments from The Ren & Stimpy Show and You Can’t Do That On Television that had me like “Whoa, nelly.” They didn't ruin my fun, but they definitely stuck with me.

(Before we get to it, let me just say that the episodes of Ren & Stimpy I watched Monday night were pretty tame as far as that show is concerned. Like, I was waiting for an extremely graphic closeup on a character's bare rump or Ren pulling out his own teeth, but those things did not happen this time. WHEW... And now I will never forgive myself for reminding myself of the time Ren yanked out every last one of his chompers. That has to one of the nastiest things to ever happen on a popular cartoon.)

When Stimpy Puts A Giant Spoon In Ren’s Mouth & Moves His Eyeballs Around (The Ren & Stimpy Show)

Stimpy puts an enormous spoon in Ren's mouth, spins the spoon, and stirs up Ren’s eyeballs in the process. It's nasty. It’d be one thing if this show ran on Adult Swim or FXX or Comedy Central, but it was on Nickelodeon. A channel aimed at youths. I don’t think kids should be sheltered from everything or whatever, but that moment is maybe a little too PG-13 for the daytime toons sched.

Ren’s Infected Face (The Ren & Stimpy Show)

BARF-O-RAMA. Again, not to be like "SHIELD THE CHILDREN'S EYES," but this is A LOT.

This Recurring Character (You Can't Do That On Television)

Dude is in brownface. Yikes.

Ren’s Skinsuit (The Ren & Stimpy Show)

I guess that’s technically his fur hanging on the towel rod, but whatever. It looks enough like a skinsuit to have grossed me out, and that's good enough a reason for it to wind up on this list.

Luckily, there were only four moments that I felt the need to include on this list, which, when you think about it, isn't so bad for a throwback block of television.
