Is Rihanna's New Album Title About Anyone?

by Jaclyn Anglis

After much anticipation and eagerness from fans, Rihanna has finally revealed the first details about her upcoming eighth studio album. This is huge, because up until this point, the "Unapologetic" performer has revealed pretty much nothing about it other than that it is "going really, really great" and that she "can't wait to finish and put it out" in an interview with the Associated Press. Well, now we know that Rihanna's new album will be called Anti . Naturally, this small detail probably raises a lot more questions than answers. One question fans might be asking is whether Rihanna's new album title is about anyone in particular.

What makes this question difficult is not only how little we know about the content of the album itself, but also the fact that the album title seems like a cliffhanger. "Anti." Defined as a person who is opposed to a particular practice, party, policy, action, etc. But anti-what, exactly? Anti-establishment? Anti-haters? Anti-war? The cover artwork, which depicts a young RiRi, splashed with red paint and a crown covering her eyes as she holds a balloon. And the image is overlaid with a beautiful yet vague poem written in Braille about being misunderstood. So at this point, the possibilities of what "Anti" means are virtually endless. This also includes the possibility that it could be a reference to being opposed to a specific person. If it is anti-one person, there are certainly a few options of people that the 27-year-old has taken an opposing view from in the past.

Rihanna and Ciara got into a heated feud on Twitter back in 2011 after Ciara said on an episode of Fashion Police that Rihanna "wasn't the nicest," after she had a less-than-stellar "run-in" with the star. Rihanna fired back on the social media page, "My bad Ci, did I forget to tip you?" The two made up, but then Ciara reignited the feud in a radio interview in 2013 when she said of her controversial behavior, "I don't know what her problem is. I think she's nuts right now, like, whatever's going on, because for me, it doesn't make any sense."

The former Two and a Half Men star started beef with Rihanna over (you guessed it) Twitter when he claimed in 2014 that the singer refused to meet with him and his fiancé because they were not "cool" enough. Ri responded, also on social media, by tweeting, "If that old queen don't get ha diapers out of a bunch..."

TLC members T-Boz and Chilli publicly criticized Rihanna back in 2014 for showing too much skin. Rihanna fired back on Twitter (seeing a pattern here?) by posting a photo of herself with her tongue sticking out and writing, "When there's no changing the fact that I'm me and they're well... they're them." For good measure, she temporarily changed her header photo on Twitter to a throwback shot of TLC members posing topless in an old magazine shoot.

This feud is probably the most depressing of them all, since it was most likely over a guy, especially since said guy in question was Chris Brown. Long before the news came out about Brown's secret baby and before Rihanna started speaking out again about why she went back to Brown after he was abusive to her, Rihanna and Tran duked it out in an ugly social media war. Sadly, even with the fight behind them, a reconciliation does not seem to be in their future.

Again, it is worth mentioning that this is all speculation and Rihanna's album title could be anti-someone else or even a larger entity than we could ever imagine. We probably won't know until she tells us herself. And that's just how she would like it.
