15 Female Role Models To Be For Halloween

by Corinne Caputo

With Halloween right around the corner, it's time to figure out what you're going to be. There is a lot of pressure to make Halloween costumes good. In this golden age of social media, you want your costume to be Instagram-worthy without looking like it's trying too hard. I feel your stress — that's why I compiled these kick-ass female role model Halloween costumes. Seriously, they're just too good.

In my opinion, if you aren't going for a pun or committing to a gory monster costume, you should definitely be a queen. Of course by "queen" I mean any number of the incredible female role models who are ruling the world today (or at any point in history). From Nicki Minaj to Amelia Earhart, there are so many inspiring women who are smart, strong, and talented, and if we can't literally be them, we can at least imitate them for a night.

Of course the celebration of accomplished women should go far beyond Halloween, but hey, this is a start. The best part is that, with the exception of maybe the gown Beyonce wore to this year's Met Gala, you can dress like almost any of your heroes using items straight from your closet.

1. Amelia Earhart

Amelia Earhart remains one of the greatest unsolved mysteries of all time. To be the first female pilot to fly solo across the Atlantic Ocean, all you need is a leather jacket, a big scarf, and if you have it on hand, a pair of goggles. And pack your bravery too — she had a lot of it.

Don't forget the Aviator hat and goggles, $40, Amazon

2. Amy Poehler

Amy Poehler is my idol, and probably yours too. She is usually seen out and about in relaxed fit jeans, a simple tee, and a blazer. Pull together this look with a pair of black booties, and her infamous cackle of a laugh.

3. J.K. Rowling

Ah yes, J.K. Rowling, the woman who gifted us a magical childhood. Her Twitter icon is such a simple look. Just be sure to carry around a notebook and a copy of Harry Potter so that it doesn't just look like you're a slightly older woman.

4. Rihanna

Is there anyone in the world as effortlessly cool as Rihanna? I don't think so.

You can copy her look in the BBHMM video with just a few simple pieces.

5. Cecile Richards

Cecile Richards, CEO of Planned Parenthood, is a modern day Wonder Woman. She calmly sat through a grueling hearing on Capitol Hill, and proved to be an inspiration for all.

You can pair any blazer you have with a short blonde wig, and of course a Planned Parenthood pin, $6, marketplace.plannedparenthood.org

6. Taylor Swift

Taylor Swift's costumes on the 1989 tour were top notch, and until we can join her squad, we can copy her looks. Before you pack your summer shorts away for the season, pair them with a crop top and some tall boots, and shake it off.

7. Marie Curie

Marie Curie's work with radioactivity paved the way for amazing advances in the science and medical communities. Her notebooks are still radioactive today, and if you've never read this beautifully illustrated biography about her, get on it.

To be this spookily awesome woman for Halloween, pair a black turtleneck with a black maxi dress, pull your hair into a bun, and tap into your general love for science.

8. Beyonce

Honestly, why would you want to be anything other than Queen Bey?

You can wear her iconic look from the "Single Ladies" video, or grab a KALE sweatshirt.

9. Gloria Steinem

Gloria Steinem, a feminist warrior for decades, is certainly a role model. The scariest part about this costume is that she's still fighting a lot of the same battles from the '70s (basic human rights for women, access to birth control, etc.).

Put this look together with a black turtleneck, aviators, and flared jeans, and keep your hair straight with a middle part.

10. Hillary Clinton

Say what you want about Hillary, the woman works hard.

All you need for this costume is one of Hillary's iconic pantsuits, and a can-do attitude.

11. Notorious R.B.G.

We can only hope to be as cool as Ruth Bader Ginsburg when we are 82.

For this look, all you need is a: Classic Black Robe, $20, Amazon with a lace collar.

12. Nicki Minaj

Nicki sells costumes on her website, because of course she does.

The spacesuit and pink wig combine into the perfect Nicki Minaj costume.

13. Hedy Lamarr

Hedy Lamarr was not only a stunning actress, but also had a hand in creating cell phones by revolutionizing how we communicate via radio. It's incredibly impressive, and she's barely talked about. Time to give credit where credit is due.

The easiest way to get her look is by dressing like a traditional 1940s starlet, and maybe carrying around the blueprints to some of her patented inventions.

14. Sally Ride

Sally Ride, the first American woman in space, is an icon, not to mention an easy costume too.

You'll need a spacesuit and some boots.

15. Amy Schumer

Amy Schumer's meteoric rise to the top is certainly something to celebrate. Her humor and wit are unparalleled, and the best part is how normal and relatable she seems to be.

Pair a t-shirt with some black pants, blonde hair, and a microphone, and get ready to make some people laugh.
