Rihanna Channeled Madonna At A Gig

by Amy Sciarretto

Guess who made her triumphant return to the stage (her most natural habitat) this past weekend? Rihanna channeled Madonna in a recent outfit for a show, rocking her supremely sexy version of the menswear trend during her surprise performance at the Los Angeles concert. The fashion rebel wore a baggy striped suit with a long jacket, loose-fitting, boyfriend-like trousers, a cami, and a yellow bra top. It was a modern update of Madonna's '90s-era, vintage "Vogue" look.

Rihanna doesn't usually take obvious inspo from other celebs or pop stars when it comes to her daring, always-keep-us-guessing fashion choices... although she did channel Olivia Pope during a White House visit. But she was definitely rocking a look reminiscent of Her Madgesty during her heyday.

Rihanna embraces menswear. She tackles it often, with her own unique flair. Her menswear ensembles are usually super baggy, but she remains sexy, adding her own flare to every look. Whether she is rocking a design student's denim ensemble on SNL or going with pink gingham checks while out and about, Rihanna slays menswear.

It was awesome to see RiRi onstage, since much fuss has been made about her delayed eighth album and the fact that she has gone more than three years in between record releases.

She slicked her hair back into a messy, blue-tinted pony and topped her outfit with a long, baggy coat.

The jacket had movement and flowed around her as she pranced around the stage, performing.

Her bottoms were high-waisted.

And she added a pop of color via the yellow bra top.

Her accessorizing consisted of a choker, which is so very '90s, along with round shades and red lips.

Don't you love seeing her with a mic in hand again?

This pose and this look were so Madonna-inspired but not reductive.

There was some layers here with the yellow bra and pink, lacy, buttoned, and dropped cami.

Welcome back to the stage, Rih!

Here's the source material (girl) for Rihanna's We Can Survive look.

While Rihanna's bra didn't have cone-shape cups, the overall silhouette and pieces are the same. High-waisted pants? Check. A bra with a blazer? Check.

Madonna's "Vogue" video look remains in vogue today because of course it does. Leave it to Rihanna to give it a millennial update, since the menswear trend continues to evolve.
