Guess Who's Rooting For Matthew McConaughey?

by Kristie Rohwedder

Close your eyes and picture that you're at a luncheon. It isn't just any luncheon. It's a luncheon in honor of Dallas Buyers Club and it's hosted by Liza Minnelli. Fun, huh? Well, that luncheon did happen. And at said luncheon, Liza Minnelli told Matthew McConaughey, "Honey, if you don't win the Academy Award, I'm giving you mine!"

What IS this luncheon? you wonder. It sounds like a dream. Close! It's Focus Features' pre-Oscar nominations/end of nominations voting season luncheon. Focus Features threw it to celebrate their main horse in the Oscar race: Dallas Buyers Club. McConaughey and Jared Leto were there. Minnelli was there. Some Academy voters were there. It was a luncheon, so that means luncheon food was there. All of it sounds good to me.

Before luncheon was served, Minnelli the Legend praised the movie and the performances. She explained that she has "nothing to do with this film" but she's "a fan of how it was done, of the insight and the way they played these characters." McConaughey wasn't the only one to receive Minnelli's praise, however. Regarding Leto's performance, she said, "I mean, everything that you did — all of the placements, every single second — I felt wonderful for you, proud of you and sorry for you all at the same time, which I think one only feels for your friends." Not the worst thing to hear from Minnelli the Legend.

And as for Jennifer Garner? "She was just so fucking great," Minnelli said. "I don't know what else to say. I haven't seen a movie like that in so long, and I'm so proud to be able to tell everybody."

Okay. I'm just going to put this out there: If anyone from Dallas Buyers Club is nominated, they should take Minnelli as their date.
