Ways To Keep Your Bedroom Totally On Point

by Toria Sheffield

I am by all definitions technically a real adult, but I am not above admitting that my bedroom still gets messy. Very messy. I think it's safe to say that I could definitely use some guidance when it comes to ways to keep my bedroom clean once and for all.

And the irony is I love a clean bedroom. It's probably one of my favorite things in the whole world. And yet clutter seems to always accumulate within days of a deep bedroom clean, and within a week or so I'm back to disorderly piles.

According to a study based out of UCLA, clutter and disorganization is directly linked to depression in women, with women who described their homes as "restful" and "restorative" generally having lower rates of depression, compared to higher rates in women who described their homes as "cluttered" and "unfinished." Not to mention, messy bedrooms are just plain time sucks. I have wasted so much time in my life looking for one specific shirt or that pair of jeans that I "know I just saw," and at the end of the day it comes down to the fact that my room can be less than organized.

If this is sounding all too familiar, then perhaps you also are in need of a bedroom organizational reboot. And the good news is I've compiled seven organizational hacks to get you started.

1. Drawer Dividers

Dial Dream Drawer Organizer, $16.79, Target.com

The average person's sock and underwear drawer is basically synonymous with chaos, and that's why drawer dividers are basically the best thing ever invented when it comes to keeping your stuff sane and organized. Not only do they allow you to actually see what you have, but they are an extremely fast and inexpensive solution to the problem.

2. Hanging Shoe Rack

Honey-Can-Do Over The Door Clear Shoe Organizer, $8.39, Target.com

Without wanting to sound too dramatic, my hanging shoe rack changed my life. I went from routinely digging around my closet floor for the "other shoe" to having everything I regularly wear on my feet in one super accessible location. I also stopped hoarding my shoes in a pile in the corner of my room, meaning I can now actually open my door all the way.

3. Mirror With Cabinet

White Mirrored Jewelry Cabinet Armoire Organizer Storage Wall Mount, $94.95, Walmart.com

This is an amazing product for anyone who has trouble keeping track of their jewelry. It also is super convenient when deciding which accessories to pair with an outfit, as your jewelry is literally an arms-reach away whenever you look in the mirror.

4. Hanging Accessories

If you don't have space for a full-length mirror cabinet but still want to get a handle on organizing your jewelry, consider a hanging jewelry tree to maximize organization without taking up any floor or cabinet space. And bonus — they look really pretty!

5. Bra Hanger

Lingerie Hanger, $10.99, Organizeit.com

This one is seriously a game-changer when it comes to keeping your bras in good condition, as well as keeping them super easy to find. I often feel as though I can never find the bra I need when I need it, and it's usually because it's stuffed in the back of a drawer somewhere.

6. Purse Hanger

Handbag HangUp Natural Purse Hanger, $14.99, BedBathandBeyond.com

I don't actually own a purse hanger, but it is next on my list of things to buy for my bedroom after I recently realized that I never seem to know what I actually have in the way of handbags and purses, instead discovering them like Easter eggs under my bed or in the back of closet throughout the year. My goal is to keep the bags I use for each season hanging where I can easily reach and assess them, and change out as the weather changes.

7. Vases For Makeup And Accessories

There's nothing quite like having to dig through a makeup bag for a makeup brush caked in weeks-old-makeup, and then having to use that very same brush on your face. Instead, a pretty vase filled with beads is a great way to keep your makeup accessories easily accessible as well as way cleaner.

Your bedroom should never overwhelm you or add more stress to your life. However, if you're starting to feel like it's become public enemy #1 in terms of your organizational peace of mind, don't worry — there are several super easy and inexpensive tools to help keep you get back on track and save you a ton of frustration in the long run.
