The Globes Have Yet To Appreciate Tom Hiddleston

by Haley Chouinard

Since Tom Hiddleston launched to fame in 2011 with his breakout role in Thor, the world hasn't been able to get enough of him. He's developed legions of fans, or "Hiddlestoners" as they've dubbed themselves, and landed roles with big time directors like Steven Spielberg and Guillermo Del Toro. The guy has become a bonafide movie star in the four short years since he began playing Loki. But despite his status as a beloved actor, Hiddleston has never won or been nominated for a Golden Globe.

While the British actor has maintained a nice balance between indie films and blockbusters over the course of his career, this year he took on his first real Oscar bait role — country music legend Hank Williams. The film, I Saw The Light, made the 2015 festival circuit and gathered a lot of buzz along the way. It was looking like Hiddleston might finally make the cut for awards season, but then Sony Pictures Classic, the film's production company, pushed the film's release until 2016. This news truncates any hope that Hiddleston, and his very loyal fan base, had of a 2016 Golden Globe nomination as films must be released in theaters (not just screened at festivals) between Jan. 1 and Dec. 31 to be eligible.

Despite the lack of recognition for his film acting, Hiddleston's theater work has garnered several major accolades. He's an Olivier Award winner, which is Britain's highest award for theater (basically the English Tony Awards); he's also won two MTV Movie Awards, an Empire Award, and been nominated for a Rising Star BAFTA (basically the British Oscars). So, while Hiddleston hasn't reached the winners' circle as quickly as actors at a similar level of fame like Eddie Redmayne, he is still regarded as a fine actor and his work will undoubtedly continue to be recognized. His next two projects are sure to be mega-successful, (Kong: Skull Island with Samuel L. Jackson and Brie Larson and the third installment of Thor), and then perhaps he'll circle back to more serious roles. Hiddleston has quickly become such a beloved actor and it seems likely that he'll be around for a good long while, with or without a Golden Globe nomination.
