Who Is Marc Mezvinsky? Chelsea Clinton's Husband Comes From Another (Much Less Famous) Political Family
Chelsea Clinton announced she is pregnant with her second child Monday via social media, prompting well wishes from tens of thousands of supporters on Facebook and Twitter, including her mom, Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton. If Chelsea's husband posted something, too, it hasn't gone viral yet. So who is he? Potential first son-in-law, Chelsea Clinton's husband, Marc Mezvinsky, is a hedge fund manager from another political family — if a bit less famous than the Clintons.
Mezvinsky's parents were both congressional representatives. First his father, Edward Mezvinsky, represented Iowa's First Congressional District in the 1970s. Then his mother, Marjorie Margolies, represented Pennsylvania's 13th District from 1993 to 1995, losing her reelection bid after one term, ironically for supporting President Clinton's budget plan. Their family is also no stranger to scandal. His father pleaded guilty to fraud in 2001 and spent five years in prison for scamming $10 million out of family and friends in a Ponzi scheme.
Mezvinsky met Chelsea at a political retreat when the two were kids. She was 12; he was 15. They became friends and stayed in touch. When Chelsea began looking at colleges in 1997, he showed her around Stanford University, where he was attending. According to Hillary at the time, the two were just friends, and Chelsea later dated Ian Klaus, a writer. It was after her breakup with Klaus that Chelsea saw Mezvinsky in a different light. Chelsea's Chief of Staff Bari Lurie said Mezvinsky was first "a shoulder to lean on" during the difficult time.
After his time at Stanford, Mezvinsky went on to work as an investment banker. In a March profile for The New York Times, Mezvinsky was described as being well-connected to some of the Clinton's richest supporters. After working at Goldman Sachs for eight years, Mezvinsky helped found a hedge fund firm, Eaglevale Partners, and tens of millions of dollars raised by the group has some connection to the Clintons. Unfortunately for the investors he recruited, they haven't seen a great return due to some unfortunate investments in Greece.
Chelsea and Mezvinsky married in 2010. The two announced their engagement electronically, too, with a mass email blast to their closest friends and family. "We're sorry for the mass e-mail," they wrote, "but we wanted to wish everyone a belated Happy Thanksgiving! We also wanted to share that we are engaged!"
The two had their first child, 14-month-old Charlotte, in 2014. On Monday, Chelsea announced her pregnancy with a picture of Charlotte, announcing that she's "going to be a big sister." Grandparents Bill and Hillary have already taken to Twitter to share in the excitement.
Between a presidential race and welcoming a new member of the family, it looks like 2016 will be a busy year for the Clintons!
