Chris Pine Praises Female Superheroes & YAAAS

by Michelle Lulic

Most male actors would do almost anything to star in a superhero movie. And hey, I get it: who doesn't want to wear an awesome costume, save the world, and be made into action figures? However, there is a much-needed revolution underway in the superhero film genre: The rise of female superheroes. Not only is this incredibly progressive movement breaking down former gender-barriers, but it's also exposing male actors to roles they may not be as familiar with as female actors may be: The love interest of a superhero. And the first male actor officially up for the role? Chris Pine being cast as Steve Trevor in DC Comics' Wonder Woman film, coming to theaters June 23, 2017. The perfect candidate for the job. Why? Because Chris Pine is already saying all the right things about his Wonder Woman role — and we've still got over a year until the film comes out!

In an interview with Total Film , the lead Star Trek actor explained how he feels about playing second fiddle to Wonder Woman star Gal Gadot, saying, "It'll be a f***ing blast. I couldn't be happier to be supporting Gal [Gadot] in what's going to be the first female-driven superhero film." Only to then be followed by the words that sound like nothing less than music to my very ears: “I think in the world today we've had plenty enough of male-driven everything. It's finally time to see how wonderful the world can be with beautiful, strong, intelligent women kicking some major ass." YAAASSS!

OK... I'm done fangirling now... Kind of. Seriously, it's a huge deal for an actor to say something like this, especially with the rise of female superheroes recently — public figures haven't always been this supportive. One actor on-board with playing the supporting role to a female superhero equal more opportunities for women within film and more open-minded filmmakers moving forward. Hopefully, Pine fully embracing and accepting his role of Steve is just the beginning.
