What Happens When You Fall Asleep With Makeup On

by Lindsey Rose Black

We've all had those nights out where the thought of taking off all that eyeliner seems incredibly daunting or doesn't even cross our minds at all. But ABCNews revealed what happens when you fall asleep with makeup on, and it isn't pretty. If you've been regularly sleeping in your makeup like The Bachelor's Brit, you might want to reconsider doing so.

ABCNews asked dermatologist Mona Gohara, MD, to spill the details on sleeping in makeup and she didn't sugarcoat the truth. Gohara explained, "The bottom line is that your skin uses sleep as an opportunity to recover from the day—and makeup makes that harder to do ... Leaving a layer of makeup on creates a barrier that can lead to acne." Eek.

And the risks of sleeping in makeup go beyond breakouts. Beyond the potential for acne, Rachel Nazarian, MD, told Refinery29, "Pollution from each day accumulates on the skin, mixing with makeup, dirt, and oil. This combination of free radicals and environmental stress has been shown to cause premature aging of skin." Furthermore, even mascara and eyeliner "can be rubbed by your pillow and end up in your eyes, which can lead to significant eye irritation," Dr. Eric Schweiger told Huffington Post.

With 2016 just around the corner, now is a great time to break the habit if you've been sleeping in makeup. To make things as easy as possible, I've scouted out the best makeup remover products that even the sleepiest (or tipsiest) of girls can use before bed!
