Kylie's Not The Only Celeb With Engagement Rumors
At this point, I'm sure we've all heard about Kylie Jenner's right-handed engagement ring seen 'round the world. And whether or not the sparkler is the real thing or a very calculated prank to break the Internet, this isn't the first time Jenner's pulled a fast one on her unsuspecting fans: In September, she snapchatted a video of Tyga in which the rapper appears to call her his fiancé. Likewise, in July 2014, she posted a selfie to Instagram of her wearing what appeared to be an engagement ring, leading to rumors that she was perhaps more involved with Jaden Smith than she had originally led her fans to believe. As of now, it's not clear what Jenner's engagement ring/normal ring-that-looks-like-an-engagement-ring photo means — and, knowing Jenner, it's probable we won't ever find out. Luckily, there's actually a lot of precedent for this in the celebrity world, so it's easy to figure out what to expect. Which is to say, lots of celebrities have sparked false engagement rumors.
So, in honor of fervor over Jenner's Instagram — and in the name of cubic zirconia rings the world over — here are five other times celebrity engagement rumors turned out to be totally false.
Nicki Minaj
On two separate occasions this year, the "Feelin' Myself" singer rocked massive diamond rings on her left hand, leading to speculation that Meek Mill might have finally put a ring on it. He did — but it wasn't what her fans were hoping. In a Billboard interview, she confirmed, “Yeah. Meek gave me that. He and I are not engaged."
Snooki
On April 1, 2013, the Jersey Shore star posted on her website, "Jionni and I eloped!!! Here's a pic of the magical day!" along with a photo of the couple in what appeared to be an expectedly over-the-top wedding setup. However, despite the "photo evidence" — a clearly photoshopped photo, that is — she later shared on Twitter, "APRIL FOOLS ya freaks!! My ass is gonna have a huge wedding lets be serious!! lololol."
T-Pain
In an interview with Vulture, the rapper claimed Robert Pattinson had popped the question to FKA twigs — unbeknownst to the couple themselves. Then, things got weirder from there: "Her music’s changed a lot since [we met]," he told the publication. "But she’s on tour so much, and anytime I call her, she’s in a different place. And she’s engaged now, so that’s about to be a whole other thing." When further prodded about, he replied, "Yeah [she's engaged], to ol’ Patty. I don’t know if she wanted anybody to know that." He later followed up his interview with the Instagram caption, "Added a little #AprilFools to my interview with Vulture Magazine today. Check it out!!!!"
Selena Gomez
In the wake of her breakup with the Biebz, Gomez flashed a diamond ring going into the Louis Vuitton show during Paris Fashion Week, leading fans the world over to believe she might be engaged to the man rumored to be her rebound, Zedd.
Kylie Jenner (Again)
In July 2014, the youngest Kardashian-Jenner posted this mirror selfie wearing what appears to be an engagement ring on her left hand, leading to speculation that she was engaged to Jaden Smith. True to form, the resulting rumors were never confirmed or denied.
Clearly, Jenner's ring Instagram isn't the first time a celebrity has fueled the rumor mill with chatter about an engagement — and I guarantee it won't be the last. Whether Jenner is engaged or not (and, let's be real, she's probably not — the ring is on her right hand!) there's plenty of evidence to back up the fact that it was clear the Instagram post was always going to do one thing: Get people talking.
