The Best Outfit From Critics Choice Awards History

by Katharine McEntee

With every red carpet season comes a bevy of beautiful women in gorgeous gowns, but there is always that one dress. You know what I mean. That one dress that stands out from all the rest and stays permanently ingrained in your brain. The one you spend weeks on end searching for, but never seem to find. Emily Blunt’s 2013 Critics Choice Awards dress is that dress for me.

I have never met a midi dress I didn’t like. In part because they are versatile — if you aren’t sure if the event is cocktail party attire or black tie you can’t go wrong with a midi — and because they are great at highlighting a fabulous pair of shoes. While most midi dresses make me swoon, Blunt’s cream-colored Miu Miu one reigns supreme. The soft ivory color of the gown compliments Blunt’s skin tone perfectly, and the beaded detailing around the neckline and back is absolutely stunning. While most of my favorite red carpet looks involve lots of sparkle and shine, there is something so effortlessly elegant about this dress that I just can’t seem to shake.

To make matters even better, Blunt’s accessories were nothing short of amazing. Her Prada platform metallic heels were the epitome of glam, as was her Just Fab kaleidoscopic-style clutch. Since her gown had a plethora of beads on it, she went the minimal jewelry route and swapped the usual statement earring for rings. While Reese Witherspoon’s pink and black number from the 2015 Critics Choice Awards was one of my contenders for the best dress, there is something about Blunt’s classic form-fitting gown that is just, well, perfect. At first glance, the dress looks like any other beautiful red carpet piece, but as soon as Blunt reveals the back of the gown, it becomes truly spectacular.

Blunt went all out on the beauty front for the 2013 Critics Choice Awards as well. She channeled 1920s glam à la Daisy Buchanan with a pin curled faux bob, minimal face makeup, dark lashes, and a bright red lip. While this is a departure from Blunt's usual beauty look on the red carpet, I have to say that the risk paid off, as the statement lip and retro hair definitely suited her to a T.

Emily Blunt might just be one of my favorite celebrities to watch on the red carpet, and not just because she and husband John Krasinski are adorable, but also because of her killer style. From floral dresses, to metallic minis, to head-to-toe beaded gowns, Blunt is seemingly willing to try anything and everything, at least once. Her eagerness to embrace new trends and to take risks makes her one to watch on the red carpet, if not the one. While I have yet to see her on the red carpet circuit this year, I can only hope that another star will try a retro-inspired look like Blunt's at the Jan. 17 awards.
