Kate Winslet & Leonardo DiCaprio Are Adorable BFFs

by Nicole Pomarico

One of my favorite running jokes in Hollywood is the one mocking the fact that somehow, despite his very obvious talent, Leonardo DiCaprio has never managed to win an Oscar. But now that he's nominated for his role in The Revenant, this may actually be the year the joke dies — and a certain former costar of his agrees. While talking to BBC News over the weekend at the London Critics Circle Film Awards, Winslet said this will be the year DiCaprio finally wins an Oscar. And even though they've remained good friends since filming Titanic together, it was a hard call for her to make, since another one of her former costars is also nominated in the Actor in a Leading Role category.

Winslet said:

I think you can sort of feel it, and I think that everyone wants it for him. It would be amazing. It’s also slightly difficult for me to, because Michael Fassbender has been nominated and I was his right hand woman for three months whilst we were making Steve Jobs and I saw how hard he worked. I think his performance is so extraordinary. But I think yeah, you can sort of feel the temperature. It’s probably going to be Leo’s year.

It's hard not to agree with her. After DiCaprio has received five Oscar nominations over the course of his career, it seems ridiculous that he hasn't taken home one of those golden statuettes yet. It's not like he doesn't deserve it! But since The Revenant has already gotten so much Oscar buzz (and DiCaprio snagged a Golden Globe for his work earlier this month), it seems inevitable that we'll finally see him make the acceptance speech he should have made years ago on Feb. 28.

And if not? Winslet will totally be there for him. Since tragically not sharing that floating door on the Titanic set in the '90s, Winslet and DiCaprio have always been very supportive of each other.

When DiCaprio Reportedly Walked Winslet Down The Aisle

When Winslet married Ned Rocknroll in a very private ceremony in 2012, a source told Us Weekly that DiCaprio was the one to give her away. How adorable is that?! My one regret is that there is no public video footage of what had to have been such a special moment.

Winslet's 2009 Golden Globes Acceptance Speech

When Winslet won the Golden Globe for Best Actress for her work in Revolutionary Road —a movie in which she also shared the screen with DiCaprio — she thanked him in her acceptance speech and actually made him cry. "Leo, I'm so happy I can stand here and tell you how much I love you, and how much I've loved you for 13 years," she said. "And your performance in this film is nothing short of spectacular. I love you with all my heart, I really do."

When DiCaprio Called Winslet One Of His Closest Friends

While talking to Express in 2013, DiCaprio had so many nice things to say about Winslet. He praised her sense of humor and added that since meeting on the set of Titanic, they've had an "unbreakable bond." He said:

She’s one of my closest friends and feels we can say anything to each other. We were both just kids of 21 when we made Titanic all those years ago. But, even then, Kate seemed more mature and worldly than I was. I cried on her shoulder many times as we found the demands of filming under the director James Cameron so tough. We have never not been friends since that time. I speak to her all the time.

When Winslet Explained Why Their Friendship Works

And unfortunately, her explanation includes the fact that they have never been romantically interested in each other, so if you're hoping they'd end up together someday (and let's be real, all of us have), it's not going to happen. But fortunately, that doesn't mean they won't remain close friends for the rest of their lives. As Winslet told Marie Claire UK:

I think the reason that friendship works is because there was never any romantic thing. It’s so disappointing for people to hear that, because in the soap opera of the Kate and Leo story we fell in love at first sight and had a million snogs, but actually we never did. He always saw me as one of the boys; I’ve never really been a girly-girl. We needed each other to lean on because we were very young and working all kinds of crazy bloody hours and it was a shock to the system.

When They Could Not Praise Each Other Enough

During an interview on Today while they were promoting Revolutionary Road, Winslet and DiCaprio were basically obsessed with each other. It's adorable to see their friendship in action, and how supportive they are of each other in their lives and their careers.

When Winslet Chose Leo Over Theo

On the red carpet at the Divergent premiere, a reporter asked Winslet if she preferred Theo James' character in the movie or Leonardo DiCaprio's character in Titanic, it was Jack, no contest. In fact, she even called DiCaprio "the love of my life." It's official. They are the cutest.

It's so good to live in a world where Winslet and DiCaprio are alive, not freezing to death in the ocean, and friends forever — even if their Titanic characters didn't quite share the same fate. Here's to more decades of their beautiful friendship!
